The program educates students to be Dental Hygienists that provide preventive dental care. They are responsible for providing treatment to prevent oral and periodontal diseases. They provide clinical, therapeutic and educational services under the direction of a dentist.

Program Details

Students of the Dental Hygiene program are prepared to successfully complete the national board exam and to pass state clinical exams for licensure to practice as a Dental Hygienist.

Fall 2022 Applications for Dental Hygiene: TEAS testing will be required for the Fall 2022 application cycle. The Medical Education Campus Testing Center will reopen on August 2, 2021. Sign-ups for TEAS testing will resume when the MEC Testing Center reopens. Refer to the Take TEAS Test step for more information on TEAS.

The first step to beginning health career training at NOVA/MEC is to attend a mandatory Information Session.

There is no in-person Information Session for this program. You are required to include the code provided during the online session on your application as proof of completion.

Transfer is not the primary purpose of this credential; however, NOVA may have agreements that facilitate the transfer of this and other career-oriented programs to selected senior institutions. Northern Virginia Community College accepts industry-standard certifications, credentials and/or professional courses for credit. Broadly, licenses, credentials and/or certifications must be current and valid for consideration. Career Prospects

After successful completion of the Dental Hygiene program, graduates will be eligible to take the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination and professional licensure examinations leading to becoming a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). Graduates may choose to pursue a career in a variety of settings. This includes private practice settings, specialized areas of dentistry, government agencies, dental education, public health, and marketing.
