The curriculum is designed to combine the principles of accounting with the essential skills of analysis, critical thinking, and information technology. The program is suitable for persons who seek employment in the accounting field or for those presently in accounting who wish to increase their knowledge and update their skills. Job opportunities include accounting trainee, accounting technician, junior accountant, and accountant. The Accounting program currently offers four pathways for students to pursue; the Bookkeeping Certificate, the Career Studies Certificate (CSC) in accounting information security with data analytics, the Career Studies Certificate (CSC) in accounting, and the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in accounting.

Program Details

The AAS in Accounting is designed for persons who seek employment in the accounting field or for those presently in accounting who wish to increase their knowledge and update their skills. Upon completion of the program, students can take an additional three courses for the Accounting Career Studies certificate, and then are eligible to proceed to the Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) exam (if other education requirements are satisfied). The Bookkeeping certificate is designed to provide the student with sufficient knowledge to keep a simple set of accounting books and/or to qualify for entry-level positions in bookkeeping and accounting. The CSC in Accounting provides students with the accounting courses needed to meet the requirements of the Virginia Board for Accountancy to sit for the CPA examination. The CSC in Accounting Information Security with Data Analytics helps prepare students for the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exam and prepares registered CPA’s for the Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) exam.
