NOVA’s Sustainability Office was established in October 2012 to provide a single point of contact for environmental initiatives and projects across the College.
The mission of the Sustainability Office is to reduce NOVA’s carbon footprint and educate future generations in environmentally sustainable policies and practices. The office aims to achieve this through a combination of projects and initiatives spanning campus operations, academics, workforce training, college community behavior, and external engagement and community outreach.
Rob Johnson joined NOVA in October 2012 as NOVA’s first Sustainability Officer. He is focused on developing a Sustainability Strategy for the College, completing its first greenhouse gas inventory, implementing projects to reduce the College’s carbon footprint, and educating future generations about environmental sustainability. His previous experience includes: U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Officer; air and missile defense analysis for the U.S. Navy; and completion of George Mason University’s first Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Climate Action Plan as an intern and research assistant in GMU’s Office of Sustainability. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from George Mason University.
