Germania Springs

Germania Springs is a natural spring located on Roy Webb Road across the highway from the home of Ed Fair, Rick Bragg's uncle. Bragg remembered, " I caught crawfish in the bright, clear waters of Germania Springs, and damned streams with my brother until the water was neck deep and freezing cold" (44).

In the summer of 1977, Rick was questioned regarding the shooting of two young people near the spring. He wrote of that period:

"I knew I was never in any real danger of being blamed for that terrible event. But it still makes me mad enough to shake, sometimes, because it was so evil, so vile, because I was forced to have any connection to it all. But, it did one thing for me. It confirmed, fiercely, my notions of class, and power. It was not so much a matter of having power to do a thing as it was having the power to stop things from being done to you. My momma never had that power, not one day in her life."
