New Workforce Financial Assistance Program
Virginia is offsetting the tuition of select workforce training programs at community colleges by 66% with the new Workforce Credential Grant (WCG). Incentive funds to offset the cost of tuition on select high-demand credentials programs are now available and programs are open for registration. The funds are available to Virginia residents who meet Virginia domicile requirements. See list of eligible programs below.
Sometimes the cost of programs that prepare you for high-demand careers can create a financial barrier. The Workforce Credential Grant (WCG) underwrites the cost of select pre-approved high-demand training programs by covering two-thirds of the cost with the expectation of you obtaining the related workforce credential. You are financially responsible for the first-third. If you are financially unable to pay the first-third as determined by the predefined set of criteria, you may qualify for Workforce Financial Assistance (FANTIC) (for more details see below under: What is the Workforce Credentials Grant?). Funding for both WCG and FANTIC programs is limited.
NOVA’s WCG Eligible Programs Include:
- CompTIA® A+ Certification Essentials (includes software and hardware)
- CompTIA® Security+
- CompTIA® Network+

How to Qualify?
*To qualify for the Workforce Credentials Grant financial assistance program or WCG you must meet the Virginia domicile requirements. Please create a MyWorkforce student profile. If you wish to register for any of the Healthcare or Information Technology (IT) WCG classes you must register for the WCG pre-qualification class section. After you have registered for a zero cost WCG pre-qualification class section you will be contacted within 2 business days by a workforce counselor to go through the pre-qualification process with you. If you want to register for a WCG class that is not healthcare or information technology you may just go ahead and register for the section of your choice. During any WCG registration process you will be required to complete the WCG qualification form electronically, complete your registration and make payment for the class. Completion of your registration does not guarantee you have qualified for the WCG financial assistance. In the event you do not qualify for WCG, you will be contacted. NOTE: If you do not qualify for WCG you will be offered to either receive a refund through our normal refund process, or to register by paying the full amount of the class. WCG qualification form for review.
To qualify for FANTIC you must first qualify for WCG. Make sure to fill out and submit the FANTIC qualification form and supporting documentation to one our full-service Workforce Offices; however, if you are pre-qualifying for an IT or Healthcare class please turn your FANTIC qualification form and supporting documentation into your pre-qualification counselor or at NOVAWorkforce@nvcc.edu. Your FANTIC forms along with your supporting documentation will be reviewed and you will be contacted with the decision of whether or not you meet the qualifications for FANTIC.
*How to qualify for some WCG programs (IT and Healthcare) has changed starting with the summer 2017 term.
What is the Workforce Credentials Grant (WCG)?
Workforce Credential Grant (WCG) is a program funded by the Virginia General Assembly to encourage the attainment of high-demand workforce credentials by underwriting the cost of approved credential preparation programs for Virginia residents that meet Virginia domicile requirements. You are required to pay one-third of the cost of the program with the explicit expectation you will seek and obtain the related credential identified for your program of choice. Failure to complete the class will result in your financial obligation to pay an additional one-third of the cost of the program back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Funding for this program is limited.
Workforce Financial Assistance (FANTIC) provides funding for you if you demonstrate the required financial need in order to enroll in an approved workforce training program leading to the attainment of an industry recognized credential or licensure and are not eligible for other funding grants or financial assistance. Applicants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. This financial assistance will pay for 80% of your cost for the program. If you qualify, you will be responsible for 20% of your portion at the time of registration. Funding for this program is limited.
What is Expected?
**Those participating in this program (WCG/FANTIC) will be expected to regularly attend and participate in all classes.
- Participants MUST attend at least 90% of all class meetings or they will not pass the class.
- Those that do not pass the class, (for any reason), may not sit for the industry certification exam and will be invoiced and responsible for paying, the 2nd 1/3 of the class overall cost, (regardless of whether the credential exam is bundled in the cost of the class or requires an additional fee for a credential assessment/certification exam at a third-party site.
- For WCG Information Technology classes, the participant will have one week after the last classroom class session to take a practice Transcender test at the Workforce Professional Test Center. If the participant scores high enough on the Transcender the participant will then have three more weeks, (a total of 30 days after the last in classroom class session), to take their industry certification exam at the Workforce Professional Test Center.
If you qualify for the ***WCG Workforce Financial Assistance (FANTIC) you will pay 20% of the student obligation (one-third of the cost of the program). WCG Workforce Financial Assistance (FANTIC) will pay the remaining 80% of the student obligation. Funding for this program is limited and will be disbursed on a first come first served basis to those that meet the required qualifications. Funding for both the WCG and FANTIC programs is limited. FANTIC participants must meet all the WCG expectations listed above.
Click WCG Quick Start Guide to help guide you through the process of pre-qualification.
**Expectations for WCG programs have changed beginning with the summer 2017 term. WCG and FANTIC financial assistance cannot be used in conjunction with the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver.
