An orientation program provides students with the opportunity to learn
skills and information to help them succeed at NVCC. The College provides
several resources for orientation, including counselors available for individual
appointments and student development courses.
A meeting with a counselor may
begin the orientation. In this interview, career interests and educational goals
are explored as well as whether additional information or tests are
needed. Declaration of a major will be evaluated,
and the first semester's courses planned. Students can speak to a counselor in person without an appointment or by
telephone during the hours the Counseling Center is open. Appointments are not
necessary, since "walk-in" services are available at all times.
Orientation
(SDV 100) is a one-credit course for both new and returning
students. Students in SDV 100 will clarify personal, educational
and career goals while becoming familiar with college and campus resources.
Assignments include skill-building workshops, readings from textbooks, viewing
videotapes, and working with computer software, CD-ROMs, and the Internet. The
activities in this course allow for flexibility during the semester, with a
majority of the work done independently. Students may choose assignments that
help them pursue individual needs and interests.
NVCC students must take SDV 100 or another SDV course before
enrolling for their 16th semester hour at the
College. All SDV courses cover topics related to academic success, responsible
decision making, and college information. Some sections address additional
topics.
Preparation
for Employment (SDV 106) - A career/professional development course that
will cover topics such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. This
class meets the requirement for graduation.
Adult
Transition (SDV 195) - This course focuses on success strategies for Adult
learners returning to school. This class meets the requirements for graduation.
