Career Services Overview

Focused career decision-making goes hand-in-hand with informed academic decision-making.  Through the NVCC - Woodbridge Office of Student Services, good decisions about career and academic choices are enhanced through SDV classes and career assessment tools.

There are specific career-related SDV classes designed to provide more in-depth career focus.  They are SDV 195: Topics in Career Development (self-assessment and career research) and SDV 106: Preparation for Employment.

For career assessment, students are encouraged by Student Service career counselors to take the Kuder computerized Skills; Work Values; or Interest “tests”, free of charge.  For additional fees, students can take the more detailed Strong Interest Inventory (SII) to explore career interests; or the MBTI to learn more about their personally type.

NVCC has a CareerStart webpage, linked from the NVCC Student Services’ page, which can provide hyperlinks covering a range of career topics:  Career information; job search assistance; choosing a major; career exploration; and locating employment opportunities.

The Woodbridge Office of Student Services provides limited job search assistance to NVCC students.  These services include the following:  Employers recruit in the cafeteria during the lunch hour several times each month, seeking qualified candidates on-campus.  A job posting board near the cafeteria lists current jobs across a variety of fields.  The MonsterTrak (via the CareerStart webpage) online job match system can provide job leads to students.  Also, there are annual career fairs held on each of the campuses across many fields that can assist students in locating jobs.

Any questions about these services can be directed to Dennis Sullivan, Woodbridge Career Counselor, phone # 703-878-5763; or e-mail to dsullivan@nvcc.edu
