NOVA students must take SDV 100 or another SDV
course before enrolling for their 16th credit hour at the College.
All SDV courses cover topics related to academic success, responsible decision
making, and college information.
SDV 100: College Success Skills (1 cr.)
Assists students in their transition to
college. Assists students toward college success through workshops on effective
study skills. Provides tools for choosing a major, exploring careers,
transferring to other colleges and seeking employment. Includes information on
healthy lifestyles, diversity and values awareness, and interpersonal
relationships. Provides information on college policies and procedures as well
the many college and campus resources available to students.

New Students/Recent High School Graduates:
Focus on transition to college and success strategies.
Transfer Students:
Designed for
students who are planning to transfer to a four year university. Topics covered
include transfer planning, college research, college success skills, and career
research/planning.
Independent Study:
After one class
meeting, remaining assignments are completed on a self-paced basis.
Internet Class:
Designed for
self-motivated, independent learners. Requires Internet and email access.
Multiple Meeting Classes:
Meet more
than one time.
Paired Classes:
SDV 100 taught in
conjunction with select academic classes.
SDV 101: Orientation to Education (1 cr.)
Designed for students interested in teaching,
particularly through the middle school level.
SDV 106: Preparation for Employment (1
cr.)
A career/professional development course that
covers topics such as resume writing and successfully preparing for and
completing the job interview.
SDV 195: Topics In:
Specific topics
include:
Career
Development (1 cr.): A career development class that will cover
self-assessment, career exploration, and basic job search skills.
Active Duty Military and Veterans (1 cr.):
Designed to assist active
duty military and veterans in their transition to college. Covers topics such
as using tuition assistance, Montgomery Bill, and success strategies.
Adult Students (1 cr.): Focus on success strategies for adult student
returning to school.
First Year Success (1 cr.):
Integrates SDV with a specific academic course.
Provide students with the academic tools for success and the skills of
self-management and self-responsibility that relate to being a successful
student.
Orientation &
Academic Coaching (2 cr.): Designed for students who may have challenges
with organization, motivation, follow-through, goal-setting, prioritizing.
Topics include college resources, study skills, self-management skills, etc. |
