What is FYE?
The First Year Experience (FYE) is a program designed to
provide academic, career, and social support to NOVA
freshmen. The program includes the New Student
Orientation, WOOD-BRIDGE Pairs Summer Program, Learning
Communities, and a FYE Student Interest Group.
·
New Student Orientation
The New Student Orientation is offered multiple times
during the months of July and August. The goal is to
introduce students to NOVA as well as provide academic
advising and registration assistance.
·
New Parent Orientation
The New Parent Orientation is offered during the New
Student Orientation. The goal is to provide NOVA
resources, registration and financial information to
parents. Additionally parents spend time learning about
college life and what their student can expect from NOVA
as well as NOVA’s expectations for their student.
During the summer following high school graduation
students can enroll in this 6 week program. Students
can earn up to four credits by taking the College
Success Skills course (SDV 100 – 1 credit) and one
additional three credit course. Courses range from
Introduction to Speech Communication (SPD 110 - 3
credits) or Introduction to Computer Applications
and Concepts (ITE 115 -3 credits). During the program
students also participate in campus events and take a
field trip.
During the fall and spring semester first year students
can enroll in courses that are designed to ensure their
success. These courses are either taught by a team of
instructors in the same classroom or are paired with
another FYE course. In either instance faculty and staff
work to ensure the textbook, lecture topics, classroom
assignments and homework are connected to enhance
student success.
FYE Student Interest Group
FYE Spring 2008 Upcoming Events
This club is created especially for first year students.
The goal is to provide social activities for new
students. Visit the Student Activities office (WC Room
158) or the Student Services Center (WC 202) for
additional information on meeting dates and times.
Why FYE?
Studies show that students who engage faculty and staff
early in their educational career have a greater success
rate than those who do not. The FYE program ensures
that students get to know faculty, staff and other
students as soon as they arrive to campus. Further the
program provides additional support and a social network
to help students to meet their educational goals.
