Northern Virginia Community College requires a minimum skill level for entry into the majority of its courses. The primary tool for determining your skill level is an interactive computer generated test developed by American College Testing in Iowa City, IA. You cannot fail these test. They are used to determine which classes you are eligible to take. The computer test, called COMPASS, is used for the Math and the English Placement Test. Allow yourself sufficient time for testing, and leave us enough time to serve you well. Do not wait until the last minute to take your tests. The Math Placement Test can take approximately thirty minutes to three hours to complete. The English Placement Test can take approximately one and one half hours to complete. There are no time limits, however, no placement test will be given 2 hours before closing, and all exams will be completed 15 minutes before closing. You will receive your results for the placement tests after you have completed the exam.
