About the Help Desk

Windows 98 does not have built-in support for 802.1x.  For laptops running Windows 98, a client must be installed to allow the user to authenticate to the network.  NVCC has purchased the Aegis 802.1x client for Windows 98.

Unlike Windows XP, Windows 98 does not have integrated utilities for configuration of wireless network adapters, so the software that was provided with your wireless adapter card must be used to configure the SSID for the NVCC wireless network.  Before beginning installation of the Aegis client, install the drivers and utilities for your specific wireless network adapter.  The example on this page is for the Cisco Aironet 350 PCMCIA card and the Aironet Configuration Utility (ACU).

The SSID for students is NOVA (case sensitive).

Aegis Installation

To begin installation of the Aegis 802.1x client click here.

A valid NVCC account is required to download the Aegis software. Enter your username and password and for domain use NVADM for faculty/staff and NVSTUDENT for students, then click OK.

A dialog box will open asking if you would like to run the install program or save to disk.  If you are connecting to the website from the laptop you plan to use for wireless communication, choose Open.  If you are on another computer, you can choose save to disk, then copy the installation program to a CD (the file is too large for a floppy disk).

Clicking Open will bring up the following box

Click Next to begin installation and the following box will appear

After reading the End-User Software License Agreement, select the bullet next to "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click Next.  The next box that appears is the Customer Information box.  For username you can put your name.  For organization enter NVCC, since the software is licensed through NVCC.  Click Next.

Leave "Complete" selected and click Next.

Click "Install" to install the Aegis 802.1x client.

Click "Finish" to complete the installation.

Click "Yes" to reboot computer.

After rebooting the computer, you will receive the following message. With the Aegis client, you can create different profiles.  Edit the default profile to make NVCC the default wireless network.  If you use this laptop in other wireless networks, such as at home, that does not use 802.1x, you may need to close the Aegis client.  This can be done by right clicking on the client icon in the task bar and selecting "Stop".  Click "Ok" in the box below to continue.

In the bottom right corner of the screen, there should be an icon like the one below.  The icon will change color based on certain conditions.  The icon in the picture below has no color because the service is stopped.  If the user has been authenticated on the wireless network, the icon will turn green.  If the user fails authentication, the icon will change to red.

The first time the Aegis client is started, you should see the following dialog box.  If this box does not appear, right click on the Aegis client icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select configure.  This is the default profile.  Edit this profile to make it the default or click Add to create a new profile.

1. In the Identity field type in your SSI.

2. Under Authentication type, select PEAP.

3. Use client certificate should be unchecked.

4. In the section called Tunneled authentication, type your student NVCC network logon ID and your password.

5. Authentication Protocol should be EAP-MSCHAP v2

Everything on this tab should be left as default.

On the Server identity tab, put a check in the box next to "Do not validate server certificate chain".

Click OK to close the following box. The computer will not reboot automatically, please shutdown and restart the computer.
