Writing Fiction for Publication

Writing publishable fiction is hard work, especially for unpublished authors. Not only do you have to worry about plot, characters and pacing, you also have to spend many unforgiving hours researching markets, writing query letters and trying to understand proper manuscript formatting. This class combines writing fundamentals with practical knowledge, offering students a chance to learn the nuts and bolts of getting published while they improve their writing through exercises, group critics and professional analysis. Writing assignments are designed to help students improve not only their skill, but also their understanding of what editors are actually looking for. Kevin G. Summers is a professional author whose published writings include the novelette “The Paladin,” the short story “His Soul Goes Marching On,” the Star Trek stories “Morning Bells Are Ringing” and “Ha’mara,” and the critically acclaimed short story “Isolation Ward 4.” You should submit a 1000-word writing sample to Kevin@kevingsummers.com before the first class.
