This three-day course is designed to provide a basic understanding of business management subjects for contractor license applicants so that they may be successful in business as well as in taking the “A” and/or “B” contractor licensing tests in Virginia. The building contractor can no longer be just a craftsman, but in order to survive he must be a total business manager. The course is helpful for every contractor (Class A, B, or C) and will help those taking Parts 2 and 3 of the exams. It is recommended that you take both the Basic and Advanced Contractor Licensing classes in order to get the full coverage of information that is important to running any type of contracting business in Virginia. The course is divided into two sections with the first part dealing with business and project management subjects relevant to contractors everywhere while the second part focuses on the unique contracting requirements of Virginia. During the course, participants learn how to avoid business failure by learning good managing practices.
The required textbook is a resource for practicing in the profession of contracting. It contains regulations governing contracting and directions detailing where to obtain additional information about registering a company, taxes and other pertinent subjects. Students will also become familiar with other useful reference books and materials. The NASCLA book and Virginia Rules and Regulations are allowed in the open-book “A” and “B” examinations.
