Intensive English Program Schedule

The Intensive English courses have been designed to prepare students for American colleges and universities. There are six levels of courses covering core skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will be placed in appropriate levels of these classes based on the results of the ESL placement test (an oral interview and a writing sample). F-1 students must take both intensive classes (Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing) to fulfill their visa requirements. Accuplacer or TOEFL test scores will not be considered when placing students into the intensive ESL program. ESL placement test results can be used at all NOVA campuses. Students have access to the library and computer labs.

All Intensive English classes will be held at the Signal Hill building at 21335 Signal Hill Plaza (3rd floor) Sterling, VA 20164.

Intensive Speaking & Listening Schedule

These intensive oral communication courses include work in listening, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. There are six levels of proficiency in these courses. Students at the Intro level start developing simple conversation skills for everyday life, and students at the highest level practice academic note taking and public speaking skills as well as acquire advanced vocabulary. Textbooks are required and can be purchased from the Loudoun campus bookstore in room LR 135. No tuition refund after September 16, 2009!

Students at the Intro level are introduced to writing sentences and students at the highest level have regular practice writing academic essays. Textbooks are required and can be purchased from the Loudoun campus bookstore in room LR 135. No tuition refund after September 16, 2009!

Core Skills ESL

These sequential courses offer the basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills that ESL students need to use English fluently. In order to move to the next level students must show course mastery in Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing. Successful completion of the core courses is necessary before taking ESL Specialty courses. New students must take the ESL placement test before enrolling. Books are required for each class and can be purchased from the Loudoun Campus bookstore (LR135).

ESL INTEGRATED SKILLS - INTRO
In this course, students learn basic communication life-skill vocabulary and engage in simple conversations.It also introduces basic sentence structure. Students will build essential writing skills.Click on the course number for online registration.

ESL IN THE MORNING – CONVERSATION AND WRITING
This course is designed to help students develop and improve their skills in understanding spoken and written English. Students work on skills needed for job advancement and college entrance: speaking English clearly and effectively, writing English using correct grammar, reading everyday English, and practicing test-taking techniques.
