Spring 2012 - Schedule for Core Skills AND FOCUS ESL Classes


Core Skills ESL Program

These sequential courses offer the basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills that ESL students need to use English fluently. In order to move to the next level, students must show course mastery in Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing or successfully complete at least 70 instructional hours (7 CEU) in one level. Successful completion of the core courses is necessary before taking most ESL Specialty courses. Books are required for each class and can be purchased from the Loudoun Campus bookstore (LR135).

All new students must take the ESL placement test before registering. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on the results of the test (an oral interview and a writing sample).

Class locations are subject to change. The college does not provide transportation to or between class locations. For maps and directions see Student Information.

Non-Instructional Days: There will be no classes February 20, March 5-11, and May 28, 2012.

ESL SPEAKING AND LISTENING COURSES and INTEGRATED SKILLS COURSES
Speaking/Listening courses focus on everyday listening and speaking skills to build and improve vocabulary and grammar. Activities include speaking and listening in class, working in small groups and role-playing. Integrated Skills courses combine speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills at the lower levels.
ESLA 1710 INTEGRATED SKILLS CONVERSATION AND WRITING - INTRO LEVEL
In this course, students learn basic communication life-skills vocabulary and engage in simple conversations.It also introduces basic sentence structure. Students build essential writing skills.

ESLA 1711 INTEGRATED SKILLS CONVERSATION AND WRITING - LOW BEGINNING
In this course, students will improve their conversation fluency, read simple paragraphs, write phrases and simple sentences, expand their vocabulary, and begin learning basic grammar.

ESL READING AND WRITING COURSES
These courses focus on building and improving English grammar, writing skills and vocabulary. The reading activities focus on speed, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Students become more confident in writing English.

ESL FOCUS COURSES

These skill-based courses help students to acquire the necessary English language skills they need to succeed in daily life. Students can focus on specific language skills, such as pronunciation, spelling, and grammar. These courses can be taken alone or in addition to the core and intensive courses. In order to move to the next level students must show course mastery in "Core Courses" or successfully complete at least 70 instructional hours (7 CEU) in one level.
