Virtual Advising

Academic advising is important at NOVA. Academic advising helps you to plan a program that will meet your educational objectives. If you cannot come to campus to meet with your advisor, Online Virtual Advising is available to you.

What: Virtual Advising is online academic advising available to prospective and current NOVA students through email and chat.
When:
  • Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. 
  • Monday through Thursday, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Notes: A NOVA Student ID number is required for most services. Some services may require follow-up via email or in-person referral to a campus.
Services Provided

Services Virtual Advising counselors can provide:

  • review and interpret Advisement Reports
  • provide contact information for various college departments and staff
  • give academic calendar information
  • program place students and provide guidance on selecting a major
  • provide information about registration and scheduling
  • identify or explain process for attaining a faculty advisor
  • interpret placement test results for course selection
  • determine course prerequisites and co-requisites
  • provide pre-admission guidance on NOVA’s competitive admission programs
  • refer students to other campus resources
  • review college policies and procedures
  • provide information about registering and scheduling
  • provide pre-admission guidance for students applying to competitive programs
  • assist students in preparing for graduation
  • explain holds and the process to have them removed
  • troubleshoot registration errors
Services Not Provided

Services Virtual Advising counselors cannot provide:

  • authorize course substitutions
  • enroll probation students in classes via Chat; you must see your probation counselor on campus
  • SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) appeals; you must complete and submit Form 125-323
  • interpret course equivalencies from other schools
  • provide detailed information about which courses will transfer to four-year institutions
  • provide extensive semester-by-semester planning or counseling
  • Verify receipt of transcripts or forms by campus offices
  • process Financial Aid
  • verify receipt of Financial Aid documents
  • provide specialized counseling for visiting students, students with disabilities, transfer students or students requiring mental health counseling
