	Compressed Video
	Interactive television between multiple college sites using a wide area network. Synchronous instruction (students and instructor meet at the same time in different places). Requires attendance at a specific time and place (usually, a VCCS college campus). Compressed Video Site for NVCC

	Telecourses
	Televised instruction using videotapes. Asynchronous instruction (students and instructor do not meet at the same time or in the same place). Students may complete the course at home (with VCR) and maintain contact with the instructor via e-mail and/or telephone.

	Web-Enhanced Courses
	Traditional classroom course supported, in part, by resources on the World Wide Web. Synchronous instruction (students and instructor meet at the same time in the same place). Students attend class on a VCCS college campus.

	Web Courses
	Instruction via the World Wide Web. Asynchronous instruction (students and instructor do not meet at the same time or in the same place). Students may complete the course at home (with a computer, web browser, and Internet service provider) and maintain contact with the instructor via e-mail and/or telephone.

	Arabic 101: Beginning Arabic I ( 5 CR)
	Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic Arabic sentence structure. Discusses the diversity of cultures in the Arab world.



	Chinese 101: Beginning Spoken Chinese I ( 5 CR)
	Introduces beginning student to spoken Chinese (Mandarin) with major emphasis on learning to comprehend and speak the Chinese language within a limited context of vocabulary and structure.



		French 101: Beginning French I ( 4- 5 CR)
		Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic French sentence structure.
		French 201: Intermediate French I ( 3- 4 CR)
		Continues to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills. French is used in the classroom. Prerequisite French 102 or equivalent.



	German 101: Beginning German I ( 4- 5 CR)
	Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic German sentence structures.
	German 201: Intermediate German I ( 3- 4 CR)
	Continues to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills. German is used in the classroom. Prerequisite GER 102 or equivalent.



		Japanese 101: Beginning Japanese I ( 5 CR)
		Develops the understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Japanese, and emphasizes the structure of the language.



	Latin 101: Elementary Latin I ( 3 CR)
	Teaches Latin grammar and composition. Introduces the translation of Latin literature, with special selections from Caesar and other writers.



		Russian 101: Beginning Russian I ( 4- 5 CR)
		Develops the understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Russian, and emphasizes the structure of the language. May include oral drill and practice.



	Spanish 101: Beginning Spanish I ( 4- 5 CR)
	Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic Spanish sentence structure. May include an additional hour of oral drill and practice per week.
	Spanish 103: Basic Spoken Spanish I ( 3 CR)
	Teaches oral communication and introduces cultural mores and customs to students with no prior instruction in the language.
	Spanish 163: Spanish for Health Professionals I ( 3 CR)
	Introduces Spanish to those in the health sciences. Emphasizes oral communication and practical medical vocabulary. May include oral drill and practice.
	Spanish 201: Intermediate Spanish I ( 3- 4 CR)
	Continues to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Prerequisite SPA 102 or equivalent. May include oral drill and practice.
