Enable Captions in Windows Media Player

To enable captions have your Windows Media Player open and follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the title bar of the media player
  2. From the menu that appears move your mouse over "play"
  3. A new menu appears, move your mouse over "Lyrics, Captions and Subtitles"
  4. Select "Engligh Captions" from the menu that appears

You can also use a simple keyboard shortcut instead if you prefer. Simply click anywhere in the video and hit the keyboard combination ctrl+shift+C. Please note that you cannot enable captioning in the embedded media player.


Enter a good query

Entering multiple words into a query causes the search to look for media files that contain those words with no respect to how close the words are to one another or the order the words are in. Depending on your search needs you may wish to perform a more exacting search.

List files for an individual course

There are three pages from which you can choose a course from which to view files from.

  1. To list a course�s files from the video catalog page:
    1. Click on the course from where you wish to view files.
    2. If you are having trouble finding the course, use the narrow your search bar to only list courses whose names begin with a corresponding letter. For instance only courses whose name starts with the letter �A� will be displayed if you click the �A� button.

  1. To list a course�s files from the search results page:
    1. After a search result your search results are displayed with hyperlinks below them specifying different operations you may do with the result. If you wish to view the files from a course that you found a result in, simply click the �[ Course ]� link below the result and the browser will redirect you to a page containing file listings for a specific course:

    1. If you did a search confined to a specific course (see: Search for spoken words across media files from a specific course)then you may optionally use the bread-crumb navigation at the top of the page. This navigation control only includes the course on the search results page when the previous search was done on a specific course:

  1. To list a course�s files from the file transcript page:
    1. The bread-crumb navigation at the top of the transcript page will include a link to the page containing the listing of files for the course that the transcription you are viewing is located in. Simply click this link and the browser will redirect you to a page containing a list of files from this course:


Play a media file

There are two pages that allow you to play a media file, each containing three options for how to play the file.

  1. From the course file listing page. Under each file listed in a course there will be three hyperlinks labeled as follows: �Details�, �Play� and �Play with captions�. Clicking on them will cause the video to play with the following options:
    1. Details: Clicking this will take you to the transcript page. The video will be playing in an embedded player on the right-hand side of the page while the transcript will reside on the left-hand side.
    2. Play: Clicking this link will open an external media player and the media will play externally.
    3. Play with captions: Clicking this link will open an external media player, the media will play externally and there will be closed-captions provided if you have closed captions enabled for your media player (see the documentation for the media player you are currently using for details).

  1. From the search results page. Under each file listed in a course there will be four hyperlinks labeled as follows: �Details�, �Play�, �Course� and �Play with captions�. All but the �Course� hyperlink enables you to play a file with the following options:

Search for spoken words across media files from a specific course

  1. For information on finding a specific course see: List files from an individual course.
  2. Check the radio button under the search text box that says �Current Course�. If there are no radio buttons only searches performed across all media files will occur. For a how-to on finding a course you are interested in see: List files for an individual course
  3. Enter a query describing the word or combination of words you are looking for in the textbox at the top of the page. Using "quotation marks" around your search term helps narrow the search. See Enter a good query for getting the most out of your queries.
  4. Click the button marked �Search� to perform the search.


Search for text within a transcript

  1. To search for text within a transcript you must have located a transcript. For information regarding how to locate a transcript see View transcript of a located media file
  2. Enter the word or word(s) you wish to search for in the text box at the top of the page. Using "quotation marks" around your search term helps narrow the search. Please note that this search simply highlights all instances of any word you place in the textbox and does not support the search operators found in Enter a good query
  3. Place a check in the radio button marked �Current File�. If this radio button does not exist you are not on a page that supports searching a transcript. For finding a transcript see View transcript of a located media file
  4. Click the Search button.

  1. All occurrences of any word you placed in the text box should now be highlighted and have buttons next to them.
  2. To go to the first occurrence of the word simply click the highlighted word in the grey panel that shows highlighted terms:

  1. To go to the next occurrence of a highlighted word hit the >> button next to the highlighted term.
  2. To go to a previous occurrence of a highlighted word hit the << button next to the highlighted term.


Search for spoken words across all media files

  1. Enter a query describing the word or combination of words you are looking for in the textbox at the top of any page in the application. Using "quotation marks" around your search term helps narrow the search.See: Enter a good query for information on getting the most out of your queries.
  2. If there are radio buttons below the text box then ensure that the radio button with the label �All Courses� is checked. If there are no radio buttons below the text box then the search will be performed across all courses.
  3. Click the button marked �Search� to perform the search.


View transcript of a located media file

You can view the text transcript of a file in two different ways, depending on how the file was located:

If the file was located from the course browser (see: List files for an individual course):

1. Click the [ Details ]link below the file name:

2. Your browser will redirect you to a page containing the transcript.

If the file was located from the search feature (see: Search for spoken words across all media files or Search for spoken words across media files from a specific course for details):
