| 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide (O'Reilly
Networking) Author: Gast, Matthew Gast, Matthew S. LOCATION: NVCC Computer Center ISBN: 0-596-00183-5 LCCN: Dewey: Value: $2.95 Series: |
O'Reilly Paperback April, 2002 Amazon.com Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a
known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network
infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess
capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE
802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network
designers. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide aims to codify the
body of knowledge needed to design and maintain wireless local area networks
(LANs). The authors succeed admirably in this, covering what installation and
administration teams need to know and digging into information of use to driver
writers and others working at lower levels. The only significant detail that's
been excluded has to do with security--a notorious weak point of 802.11x LANs.
The authors cover the feeble but widely used Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
authentication protocol in detail and devote another whole chapter to 802.1x,
which is an emerging authentication scheme based on Extensible Authentication
Protocol (EAP). The author has considerable skill in communicating information
graphically and does a great job of using graphs to show how communications
frequencies shift over time and how conversations among access points and
network nodes progress over time. This is indeed an authoritative document.
--David Wall Topics covered: How IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networks
(also known as WiFi networks) work, and how to configure your own. The framing
specification is covered well, as are authentication protocols and (in detail)
the physical phenomena that affect IEEE 802.11x radio transmissions. There's
advice on how to design a wireless network topology, and how to go about network
traffic analysis and performance improvement. Book Description As a network
administrator, architect, or security professional, you need to understand the
capabilities, limitations, and risks associated with integrating wireless LAN
technology into your current infrastructure. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The
Definitive Guide provides all the information necessary to analyze and deploy
wireless networks with confidence. Over the past five years, the world has
become increasingly mobile. Traditional ways of networking have altered to
accommodate new lifestyles and ways of working. Wireless networks offer several
advantages over fixed (or wired) networks, with mobility, flexibility, ease and
speed of deployment, and low-cost at the top of the list. Large productivity
gains are possible when developers, students, and professionals are able to
access data on the move. Ad-hoc meetings in the lunch room, library, or across
the street in the café allow you to develop ideas collaboratively and act on
them right away. Wireless networks are typically very flexible, which can
translate into rapid deployment. Once the infrastructure is in place, adding new
users is just a matter of authorization. After a general introduction to
wireless networks, this practical book moves quickly into the gory details of
the 802.11 standard. If you ever need to debug a wireless network that isn't
working properly, you'd better understand this material. 802.11 MAC (Media
Access Control), detailed 802.11 framing, WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy
protocol), 802.1x, management operations, and the PCF (point coordination
function) are all covered in detail. Author Matthew Gast also supplies
impressive detail on the physical layers. As for getting a wireless network up
and running... Gast offers clear, no-nonsense guide for using 802.11 on Windows
and Linux, using and selecting access points, making deployment considerations,
and seeing to 802.11 network monitoring and performance tuning. In the final
section of the book, he summarizes the standardization work pending in the
802.11 working group. If you're looking for one book that provides a full
spectrum view of 802.11, from the minute details of the specification, to
deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting, 802.11 Wireless Networks: The

| ActivePerl with ASP and ADO Author: Martinsson, Tobias LOCATION: CT131E Database ISBN: 0-471-38314-7 LCCN: 00020737 Dewey: 005.13/3 21 Value: $7.50 Series: |
John Wiley & Sons Paperback April 4, 2000 Amazon.com Perl tends to be talked about as a cross between a religion and a
programming language. It has a lot going for it: in particular, it's free and
available on most platforms. ActivePerl is Perl implemented as an ActiveX
component, enabling its use as an ASP scripting language for IIS. Using
ActivePerl rather than Perl with CGI takes up fewer server resources. ActivePerl
with ASP and ADO is aimed at Windows developers, though it isn't obvious why
they'd want to use Perl rather than Microsoft's native VBScript. This text
explains the basics of the Perl language, along with ASP and ADO, but you really
need more than this book if you're going to realize the full power of Perl as an
ASP-scripting language. On the ASP side, the book provides good explanations of
how and why things happen and how to make them happen the way you want them to.
It discusses statefulness and cookies, along with simple ASP pages and database
connectivity. The text discusses ADO usage in depth--including such esoterica as
converting between ActivePerl scripts and command-line Perl for more efficient
client-data presentations. The book ends with the Record object, a hierarchical
data structure, followed by appendices--which include a collection of useful
scripts. ActivePerl and all the code is on the companion CD-ROM. ActivePerl with
ASP and ADO is authoritative and its author is clearly an expert, but pity the
poor beginner who has to master all three languages at once. Despite the
roller-coaster ride, the book is well structured and provides a concise source
for Windows developers looking to move to a more powerful scripting language.

| ADSI ASP Programmer's Reference Author: Hahn, Steven LOCATION: CT131E Database ISBN: 1-86100-169-X LCCN: Dewey: Value: $0.99 Series: |
John Wiley & Sons Paperback October, 1998 Amazon.com Though it may not sound exciting at first glance, the Microsoft
Active Directory Service Interface (ADSI) can let programmers automate the
administration of remote resources such as users, files, and printers across the
entire corporate intranet. Steven Hahn's ADSI ASP Programmer's Reference
provides a short, handy guide to getting started with this very important
enterprise technology. Early sections introduce ADSI, which allows programmers
access to a variety of directory services, including Windows NT 4/5 (Windows NT
5 is now known as Windows 2000), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP),
Netware 3.x/4.x, and Domain Naming System (DNS). (In theory, with a single
Windows NT box and IIS, an organization could administer resources remotely on
any of these diverse platforms.) Early sample programs look at getting to domain
information. Then it's on to querying users, changing passwords, and then
managing groups and security. In one sample, the author provides a Web-based,
remote user manager to demonstrate the use of the ADSI User object (which gives
access to no less than 47 different user properties). Though all samples use
VBScript and Active Server Pages (ASPs) for Web-based administration, ADSI
objects will also work with C++ and Java. Later sections look at the remote
administration of services and files and provide background material on the
LDAP, which is the foundation of ADSI (and the Active Directory in Windows NT
5). Several concise appendices on ADSI objects and error codes round out this
efficiently presented guide, which is sure to be valuable to any Windows system
programmer considering Web-based administration. --Richard Dragan Book
Description All distributed applications need to know where resources are to be
able to use them. Active Directory is the mechanism for tracking resources
(components, applications, users etc.) wherever they are on distributed
networks. This is a book for experienced systems developers and programmers who
would like to use HTTP (the protocol of the Internet) to deliver sophisticated
system level solutions using light-weight client browsers. Described in the book
are applications, with code samples, that use Active Directory to manage users
and user-groups, system services, file services, and the print queue. Although
Active Directory can be used to access and manage different systems (NT 4.0, NT
5.0 (beta), NDS, LDAP Compliant, etc.) all of the code in this book will be
using the NT 4.0 Server as a target system

Wrox Press Paperback April 15, 1999 Amazon.com With full examples and coverage of all relevant APIs, ADSI CDO
Programming with ASP shows you how to manage entire networks and e-mail systems
using browser-based interfaces. Early sections explore the basics of Active
Directory Service Interface (ADSI) for managing directories (including Active
Directory and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol [LDAP] directories) and the
Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for managing Exchange Server (and other e-mail
systems). Used together, these two APIs can give administrators control over the
entire network. The authors rely on examples to illustrate how to work with
ADSI, while pointing out the VBScript code required to perform specific tasks
(for instance, adding a user or changing a password). A Rolodex example shows
how ADSI manages the administration of users in Windows NT, while CDO takes care
of mailbox management and distribution lists. A second example allows the
administration of all network resources--whether domains, files, or e-mail
messages--transparently across the network. This "library project" starts out by
explaining how to authenticate users and then tells you how to build a Web page
that can enumerate all the objects in a network through ADSI/CDO. Subsequent
enhancements include the ability to change and save e-mail messages and to move
users, mailboxes, and messages between computers. Later chapters look at finding
network objects, including searching files and messages. One example shows how
to use the CDO Rendering Library for displaying calendar information within
HTML. Another useful example is a scheduling application used to book rooms.
Final sections discuss security issues and list all ADSI and CDO objects. In
all, this title is a truly worthy resource for mastering the considerable powers
of ADSI and CDO. --Richard Dragan Book Description The explosion of the Internet
has redefined networking. What was a strong proprietary networking world has
conformed to a rapid race to optimize future networks and provide compatibility
to today's and yesterday's legacy systems. The release rate of new technology
has tripled in development. The new technologies provide many solutions and
options for customers and clients alike. Client expectations and functionality
has exponentially increased. All these benefits of growth leaves the customer
and Solution Provider trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Two
technologies from Microsoft collectively ease the client and solutions providers
decision: Microsoft Active Directory Service Interface (ADSI) and Microsoft
Collaborative Data Objects (CDO). The combination of ADSI and CDO provides the
glue that allows easy pasting of any companies' puzzled networks for yesterday,
today and tomorrow.

and customer-supplier relationships, which in turn helps you make the right
improvements. The Basics of Process Mapping introduces process mapping and shows
you how to use it in your organization. Two levels of process mapping are
detailed: Relationship mapping, which gives a "macro," aerial view of work
relationships and the flow of work, and highlights customer-supplier
interactions. Cross-functional process mapping, which gives a closer view of
work as it is really performed, across functions, showing where specific process
steps fall. The book contains a case study of both levels of process mapping and
guidelines for when to use each type. It also explains the relationship of
process mapping to flowcharting. This book is great to use as a hands-on team
resource, a training supplement, and a reference.

| Case*Method: Entity Relationship Modelling Author: Barker Barker LOCATION: CT226 ISBN: 0-201-41696-4 LCCN: Dewey: Value: $55.87 Series: |
Addison-Wesley Professional Hardcover January 1, 1990 From the Inside Flap PurposeThe purpose of this book is to provide data
analysts, strategists and data administrators with a definitive guide to Entity
Relationship Modelling. At the same time, I was very keen that the book should
be well-thumbed by regular use, as opposed to sitting on someone's shelf. I
believe that a sound grasp of entity relationship modelling can provide a firm
architectural framework for understanding a business and creating flexible
systems for the future. There are, however, many things that need to be
considered over a period of time to take advantage of these basic techniques.
Not least of these considerations is understanding the meaning of words as
applied by our users and separately within the Information Systems department.
It is certainly my experience that many system developments fail because of the
use of jargon and protectionism within the ivory tower of the Information
Systems department, coupled with the bewildering explosion of technology. In
this book I am implicitly recommending that analysts must discard their egos,
and instead recognize that there is strength in their Human fallibility. In
practical terms it means seeking out the most thorough and accurate
understanding of the business, and then exposing that to your users and peers so
they can help you gain even more accuracy. I have seen this 'egoless' team
approach not only enable teams to build far more appropriate systems but act as
a catalyst, knitting together users, system development staff and even
accountants. How to Use This BookI hope this book will be used by novice and
expert alike. It has, therefore, been designed to provide easy-reading,
tutorial-like chapters and definitive reference chapters and appendices. Later
chapters contain more complex examples and techniques to be used once you have
mastered the basic techniques. A single example runs through the book, based on
a hypothetical airline. However, other examples and common problems are provided
to help minimize your learning curve. The appendices are designed to cover other
useful concepts, further detail quality checks, first-cut database design and
data administration. All the important terms in the book are covered by the
glossary and, finally, an extensive index and the contents list are there to
provide alternative entry points to the information in the book. This book
should provide 'hot-line' support to your entity relationship modelling when
that really key problem requires urgent resolution. AcknowledgmentsWriting a
book about something you have been doing for years sounds straightforward. I
found myself going over projects and discussions from the last twenty years. It
is really amazing what I have learnt from my colleagues in England and the
United States, and especially from many of the users who kept insisting that we
really must cater for yet another important exception. Ensuring that the book
itself is complete, consistent and coherent was a tedious but worthwhile task. I
would like to thank my close colleagues who took the time to expose ambiguities,
difficulty in understanding, errors and omissions. In particular I would like to
say a special thank you to Barbara, my wife, with whom I have worked weekends
and into the early hours whilst we struggled with definitions, style, diagrams
and terminology. Richard Barker July, 1989 0201416964P04062001 From the Back
Cover Now data analysts, strategists and data administrators can learn the
powerful technique of entity relationship modelling from this definitive guide.
In a lucid instructional style, Richard Barker shows how the data modelling
technique can be applied to develop high-quality, integrated information
systems. Special features of the book include: a wealth of realistic examples
illustrating the technique in practice detailed appendices highlighting the key
topics including data normalization, CASE tool support, data administration and
database design a definitive glossary of all important terms. It is designed to
be equally valuable as a training aid and as

Cisco Press Hardcover September 25, 2003 Amazon.com Every partner company of Cisco Systems needs a number of
Cisco-certified people on its staff. While the basic Cisco Certified Network
Associate (CCNA) exam will satisfy basic Cisco requirements, the Cisco Certified
Design Associate (CCDA) indicates more rigorous training and greater capability.
Job applicants with CCDAs will outshine CCNAs every time. CCDA Exam
Certification Guide will help you earn your CCDA rating, obviously, but goes
beyond mere test preparation by explaining the concepts that govern the behavior
of Cisco data networking equipment. Look in this book--authorized by Cisco, and
written with the help of a number of its employees--for the background material
you need in order to make sense of product manuals and command-line help. The
authors begin each chapter with a quiz that's meant to gauge your understanding
of a subject (IPv6 addressing, for instance) and thereby help you spend your
study time wisely. A reader who commits to working through a particular chapter
is first presented with increasingly detailed information, beginning with
general concepts and theories and ending with specific product details and
procedures, where they're applicable. Chapters end with quizzes that contain
questions in the style of the exam, and the book's final 10 percent or so is
devoted to case studies that illustrate how the CCDA techniques taught elsewhere
might be put into practice. Overall, CCDA Exam Certification Guide comes across
as a careful and comprehensive treatment of the published CCDA exam objectives,
and a volume that will reward diligent study. --David Wall Topics covered: The
subjects covered on the Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA) exam (640-861).
These include design methodologies, LAN and WAN design principles, addressing
and routing, and integrated security. Book Description The official test
preparation guide for the CCDA 640-861 DESGN exam Review topics in the CCDA
640-861 DESGN exam for comprehensive exam readiness Prepare with proven study
tools like foundation summaries, and pre- and post-chapter quizzes to ensure
mastery of the subject matter Get into test-taking mode with a CD-ROM testing
engine containing over 200 questions that measure testing readiness and provide
feedback on areas requiring further study The first step in the Cisco Systems
certification networking design track, CCDA (Cisco Certified Design Associate)
certification requires that a candidate pass the CCDA 640-861 DESGN exam. CCDAs
have the skills needed to determine customer requirements for security,
scalability, and network management; design a network structure that meets
customers' needs; identify how to build a network prototype; and link Cisco's
products in an end-to-end manner. CCDA Exam Certification Guide (CCDA
Self-Study), Second Edition is designed for professional networkers and students
who are pursuing CCDA certification. As such, the book will cover all the exam
topics upon which candidates will be tested in this new version of the CCDA
exam. Each chapter uses all the necessary components to help a reader prepare
for the exam, including "Do I Know this Already" quizzes that assess knowledge;
Foundation Summary sections that highlight essential concepts; exam topic lists
for easy reference; and end-of-chapter review questions. The final chapter in
the book contains scenarios that help readers prepare for the exam. A companion
CD-ROM contains more than 200 questions intended to provide testing preparation
and feedback on areas for further study.

Osborne Publishing Hardcover June 12, 2000 Amazon.com The Cisco Remote Access exam (640-505), one of the larger hurdles
you'll have to overcome as you make your way toward your Cisco Certified Network
Professional (CCNP) professional rating, trips up lots of candidates. Even if
you have some experience with Cisco wide area networks (WANs), you're well
advised to pick up a book like CCNP: Building Cisco Remote Access Networks Study
Guide. It explains the material you'll be tested on in absolute terms (which
means you can use it also as an on-the-job resource) and supplements the
explanations with test-specific sections that show you how the material is
likely to appear on the exam. This combined approach is good in that it will
prepare you for both the content and the form of the exam. The book often makes
side comments on, for example, what interpretation of debatable issues is likely
to be considered "correct" in an exam question. Each chapter concludes with
exam-like multiple-choice questions, which are followed by explanations of why
the answer is what it is. Exercises make up some of the most useful parts of
this book; in a typical one, you learn the process of setting up a
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection with Challenge Handshake Authentication
Protocol (CHAP). Each required input command is presented and the output that
appears in response listed, annotating each input/output cycle with informative
text. --David Wall Topics covered: The published objectives of the Cisco Remote
Access exam (640-505), including wide area network (WAN) concepts, configuration
of an asynchronous interface on a Cisco router, implementing Point-to-Point
Protocol (PPP) and various authentication schemes, Dial-on-Demand Routing (DDR),
and leased lines. The section on the Cisco 7000-series routers and the ins and
outs of their configuration is particularly good. Book Description Study for the

coverage of exam objectives, Syngress Media's CCNP Building Cisco Remote Access

Addison-Wesley Professional Paperback June 7, 2001 Amazon.com Black-hat hackers--that is, malicious people who want to break
into your networks and machines--are proliferating, it's true. But the number of
systems available for them to attack is growing at an even faster clip, which
means you can head off a lot of attacks on your Internet-connected resources by
following the advice in The CERT Guide to System and Network Security Practices.
Julia Allen has distilled a series of "best practices" documents from the CERT
Coordination Center (a clearing-house for information about computer attacks)
into readily absorbable advice on computer security. She shows how to configure
systems for inherent resistance to attack, how to set up logs and intrusion
detection tools as early and reliable tripwires, and, to a lesser extent, how to
deal with an attack in progress. Allen's approach is not focused on the details
of particular operating systems, applications, or items of equipment, though she
does include some such information in a sizable appendix. Most of the time,
procedural outlines are phrased generically ("Disable the serving of Web server
file directory listings"). It's up to you to figure out what the steps mean,
specifically, in terms of your hardware and software. The advice is carefully
researched and therefore valuable. If implemented carefully, Allen's recommended
practices should deter all but the most determined hackers from harassing your
systems. --David Wall Topics covered: Techniques for hardening computers and
networks against compromise by malice-minded hackers, detecting break-ins and
other attacks when they occur, and designing security policies to minimize
potential damage. Specific advice has to do with locked-down workstations,
servers in DMZs, firewalls, and intrusion detection utilities. Book Info (Cert
Books) Guide to protecting systems and networks from compromise, for system
administrators. Covers two main issues: dealing with and hardening security
systems, and intrusion protection and response. Covers up to 80 percent of the
security incidents reported to the CERT/CC. Softcover. DLC: Computer security.

Cisco Press Hardcover July 31, 2001 Amazon.com Cisco Systems has lately become aggressive in promoting
applications of the IP network infrastructure equipment that the company has
traditionally sold. Cisco CallManager--the subject of Cisco CallManager
Fundamentals--is essentially an IP-based Public Branch Exchange (PBX) that
enables companies to carry their voice and data traffic on a single network
infrastructure. This book explains how CallManager (originally developed by
Selsius Systems) goes about providing call-control services to IP telephony
devices and performing reliably as a corporate telephone switch, and offers
insight into how the product may evolve. The volume provides systems architects,
engineers, and implementation technicians with the details they need to build
strong CallManager systems. Written by members of the CallManager development
team and extensively edited for accuracy, Cisco CallManager Fundamentals uses
prose and remarkably clear network diagrams to make its points. People looking
for a detailed understanding of how CallManager works will find themselves
delighted. While technicians looking for click-this, click-that procedures will
be generally disappointed (such didactic techniques are not typical of Cisco
Press books), they will find a fair number of sections that explain, in general
terms, how to do such administrative work as loading users' names into a
CallManager database and routing calls to emergency numbers. --David Wall Topics
covered: All aspects of Cisco CallManager, versions 3.0x and 3.1, of interest to
the people who design, implement, and maintain the IP telephony solution.
Matters of system architecture (with plenty of information about hardware and
network requirements), call routing, media processing, and reporting are all
covered. Does not include details of CallManager's integration with the
Intelligent Contact Manager (ICM) business-rules engine, or much information on
external Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) applications. Book Description
Exposes the inner workings of CallManager to help you maximize your Cisco IP
Telephony solution Learn how to deploy and manage a CallManager solution
Understand how CallManager processes information through detailed architectural
examples and descriptions Understand the components that make up CallManager
call routing through the use of basic to advanced examples that solve enterprise
call routing problems Learn detailed information about North American and
international dial plans, trunk and station devices, media resources, managing
and monitoring CallManager, and call detail records Cisco CallManager
Fundamentals provides examples and reference information about CallManager, the
call processing component of the Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video, and
Integrated Data) IP Telephony solution. Cisco CallManager Fundamentals uses
examples and architectural descriptions to explain how CallManager processes
calls. This book details the inner workings of CallManager so that those
responsible for designing and maintaining a Voice over IP (VoIP) solution from
Cisco Systems can understand the role each component plays and how they
interrelate. You'll learn detailed information about hardware and software
components, call routing, media processing, system management and monitoring,
and call detail records. The authors, all members of the CallManager group at
Cisco Systems, also provide a list of features and Cisco solutions that
integrate with CallManager. This book is the perfect resource to supplement your
understanding of CallManager.
