Douglas Brammer, Manager, State Government Affairs - Verizon
My role is to represent Verizon at the state and local government level, as well as manage corporate philanthropy. I have served in leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board of Directors, for several nonprofit organizations where I led efforts to secure financial and volunteer resources in support of each organization’s mission. My work in the community has involved two Governors as well as leaders from the business and nonprofit community.
Over the next ten years, jobs that require Science, Technology, Engineering and Math will outpace all others and US students are unprepared. In 2013, more than 1 in 4 8th graders scored below the basic level in math. Only 17 percent of 12th graders are both proficient in math and interested in majoring in a STEM field in college. For women and students in undeserved communities the gap is even wider.
This is a critical issue that Verizon is passionate about. A workforce that is fluent in STEM will help secure a more stable future for ourselves and our students.
Verizon believes that technology can help. We’re infusing technology into the classroom and creating opportunities that are changing the way teachers teach and students learn. Through our education programs — Verizon Mobile Learning Academy and the Verizon Innovative App Challenge — we are using mobile technology to increase student achievement and interest in STEM.
Through the Verizon Foundation we’re also investing grants in programs that address STEM-related education. Research shows that one of the most effective gateways to STEM education is competitive robotics. SySTEMic Solutions offers students the opportunity to learn basic computer programming, engineering and technology skills while gaining vital experience in teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. Students from across the entire Northern Virginia footprint have an opportunity to participate in this program. It is critical that we prepare our students and get them excited about careers in STEM. SySTEMic Solutions offers an important opportunity to do that.
Verizon’s approach to sponsorship is a philosophy we call ‘Shared Success.’ It’s about leveraging our corporate values to create economic and social value. We believe there are tremendous opportunities to grow and innovate by leveraging our technologies, our philanthropy and our employees to address important social issues, such as STEM education. In doing so, we create value for society and us.
Verizon believes in the power that STEM education programs can have in transforming communities. So we look for strategic programs, like SySTEMic Solutions, that Verizon can support to make Virginia a better place for children and families.
I am inspired by the ability of Verizon’s technology to transform every industry and society it touches. Consider the impact that wireless technology has had, and continues to have, worldwide. I continue to be inspired by the creativity and commitment of my Verizon teammates whose inspired minds are a powerful force that can address big challenges, disrupt the status quo and eventually change the world.
All of us who care about the future of technology share in the responsibility of encouraging young people to have faith in their own ideas and in their capacity to succeed. Students should find what challenges and inspires them and then pursue that with passion and integrity. As business leaders we owe them the kind of professional opportunities that will ignite their skills and talents. By getting and staying involved we can help students who participate in programs like SySTEMic Solutions to become students who innovate –transforming not only their futures but also our own.
