Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is a two-year college offering college-transfer and occupational-technical programs. NVCC has five campuses (Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, and Woodbridge) conveniently located throughout Northern Virginia, and an Extended Learning Institute (ELI).
NVCC is a part of the Virginia Community College System and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia, 30033-4097, telephone number 404/679-4501) to award associate degrees and certificates in selected occupational areas. ADMISSION
If you have a high school diploma or the equivalent, or are at least 18 years old, and are able to benefit from enrollment, you are eligible for admission to NVCC. You must complete an Application for Admission and submit it to the campus of your choice. This campus will become your home campus where your records will be maintained. You may change your home campus at the Admissions and Records office. It is to your advantage to complete and submit your application early. You will be unable to register until this form has been processed and you have been admitted to the College.
If you are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition rates, you must also complete an Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates. Eligibility for in-state tuition rates will be determined on review of this completed form.
Restricted Programs
If you plan to apply to any of the Health Technologies programs or the Veterinary Technology program, refer to the "Instructional Programs" section of the College Catalog for the special admission requirements. Also, in this schedule, see "Campus Specific Information" for details about Health Technologies Programs at Annandale and Veterinary Technology at Loudoun.
International Students
If you are an international student applicant requiring an I-20, you should see the College Catalog for admission requirements. If you are an international student who is on F1/M1 status, you must submit a TOEFL score of 500 or above in order to be admitted. If your native language is not English, you must complete the English Proficiency Test (EPT) before you register. Your test score may require that you complete English as a Second Language (ESL) courses before you enroll in any other courses. Information on these testing requirements is available from the Admissions and Records Office.
ASSESSMENT AND PLACEMENT TESTING
Basic skills assessment and placement testing are intended to assist you in selecting courses and designing an academic program in which you will most likely be successful. THESE TESTS ARE NOT ADMISSIONS TESTS.
Basic Skills Assessment
Assessment of your strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing, and mathematics will help you determine the appropriate courses to select. This assessment is accomplished through a group of basic skills assessment tests administered through the Testing Center at each campus.
If you are a degree-seeking student, you are encouraged to take basic skills tests in reading, writing, and mathematics before you register for classes.
If you are a student who has not taken the basic skills tests and who has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of less than 2.0 after the completion of 9 semester hours at NVCC, or are transferring to NVCC with a cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 (regardless of the number of hours completed), you must take the basic skills test in reading and writing. A counselor will determine if it is appropriate for you to take basic skills tests in mathematics as well. For more details about GPA, see "Academic Information," in the Administrative Information section of the Catalog.
Course Placement Testing
Some courses require that you obtain a minimum score on one or more placement tests before you may enroll in those courses. If your score on the required placement test(s) is too low, you must complete prescribed courses. The course(s) required will be determined by your score. These requirements apply to all campuses and ELI, unless specifically waived by the responsible division chair.

COURSE PREREQUISITES
Courses that have prerequisites are identified in the course listing section of the College Catalog. You may not enroll in a course unless you have successfully completed all prerequisites.
COURSE REPEAT POLICY
You will be limited to two enrollments in the same credit course. If you need to enroll in the same credit course more than twice, the need must be documented and presented for approval by the provost or provost's designee. This limitation does not apply to courses in the "Description of Courses" of the NVCC Catalog identified as general usage courses: 090, 190, 290; 095, 195, 295; 096, 196, 296; 097, 197, 297; 098, 198, 298; 099, 199, and 299.
If you were enrolled during any semester or session from summer 1994, or thereafter, these are your guidelines for repeating a course: (1) If you repeat a course, only the last grade earned, not the higher of the two grades, is counted in computing the cumulative and curriculum GPA; (2) Grades of "W," "X," and "I," shall not count as first or subsequent attempts for purposes of this policy. These criteria apply only to courses you take under the semester system (beginning fall, 1988) at NVCC. Graduates' curriculum and cumulative GPAs and honors designations at the time of graduation will remain unchanged. Certain courses where repeat enrollments may result in new subject matter are not eligible for this policy. Examples are general usage courses, applied music, music ensemble, and others.

Alexandria Campus
Walk-In Advising - The Counseling Office is in the Library and counselors are available on a walk-in basis Monday through Thursday, 8:30AM-- 7:30PM; Friday, 8:30AM--5:00PM.
Annandale Campus
Advising - Walk-in advising for new students and non-program-placed students is available weekdays during registration. Counseling Center hours during registration are Monday through Thursday, 8:30AM--7:30PM and Friday 8:30AM--5:00PM. Call 323-3200 for information and advising session times. Continuing students who have been program-placed should contact the instructional division for advice.
Loudoun Campus
Walk-In Advising - Counselors are available Monday through Thursday 8:30AM--7:30PM and Friday, 8:30AM--5:00PM. It is strongly recommended that new students consult a counselor (Rm. 253) before registering for classes. Continuing students who have been program-placed should contact the instructional division for advice.
Manassas Campus
Walk-In Advising - Walk-in counseling hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30AM until 7:00PM and Friday, from 8:30AM until 5:00PM, except for holidays.
Woodbridge Campus
Walk-in Advising - Counselors are available Monday through Thursday from 8:30AM until 7:30PM and Friday from 8:30AM--5:00PM. Faculty advisors will be available on Thursday, January 9, 1997.
GRADUATION
You must meet with your faculty advisor no later than September 6 to review your academic record. Failure to contact your advisor in adequate time may result in late notification of outstanding requirements and ineligibility to graduate at the end of the spring semester. You must submit your application for graduation to your home campus Admissions and Records Office no later than January 29, 1997.

SAFETY INFORMATION
The College provides information on the incidence of crime at the College, as well as safety programs for students. This information is available in the dean of Student Development's Office and the campus Police and Public Safety Office.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE ASSISTANCE
In accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, NVCC supports efforts to eliminate drug and alcohol abuse through a series of programs and services designed to prevent use of substances which are illegal and harmful, and to assist individuals who suffer from substance abuse. The use of drugs and the abuse of alcohol can imperil your health. The illegal possession, use or distribution of controlled substances may result in legal sanctions including imprisonment and fines. Such conduct on campus can also result in the College taking disciplinary action as stated in the Student Handbook. If you or someone you know needs help, contact the Counseling Center at any of the campuses for information about referral to community agencies.

METHODS OF REGISTRATION
Telephone Registration and Add/Drop
See the NOVAnet Telephone Registration Worksheet at the back of this schedule for telephone registration information. If you are a hearing- impaired student or are having difficulty using telephone registration, you should contact the Counseling Center.
In-Person Registration/Late Registration
Complete the Registration and Tuition Worksheet. The form, located at the back of this schedule, and any placement test results must be brought with you when you register.
You may register at any campus unless you are enrolled in a restricted program (Veterinary Technology or any Health Technology program). If you are in a restricted program, you must register at your home campus. If you are receiving financial aid, you may register at any campus, but you must pay tuition and submit financial aid application forms at your home campus.
Registration Changes on Campus
If you need to add a class and/or drop a class, fill out a Registration and Tuition Worksheet and circle "A" for add, or "D" for drop. The Registration and Tuition Worksheet should then be taken to the Admissions and Records Office and the Business Office.
If you are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition rates, you must complete an Application for In-State Tuition Rates prior to registration and payment of tuition. You must submit this form to your home campus for review. To be eligible for in-state tuition rates, you must be continuously domiciled in Virginia for at least one year immediately preceding the first official day of classes. Supporting documents and additional information may be requested. Please refer to the College Catalog or contact the campus Admissions and Records Office for further domicile information.
The total cost of enrollment at NVCC is based upon a charge per credit hour. The charge consists of tuition and fees as follows:

TUITION PAYMENT
Tuition payment is due at the time of registration. If you plan to pay in person, Business Office hours are as follows:

You may pay by cash, check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, agency contract, or student financial aid (if you have received an official financial aid award letter from your home campus Financial Aid Office). Cash is accepted only in person at any campus Business Office during regular business hours. All payments, other than cash and student financial aid, must be for the exact amount and made payable to NVCC. Checks must include the student's name and student ID number. Third party checks made out to the student are not acceptable. Once you make a tuition payment you may not submit another method of payment (i.e., an agency authorization for a previous check or credit card payment.) A service charge of $20.00 is charged to you for any check that is dishonored, except when the bank is at fault. In order to avoid financial responsibility, you must drop a class if you decide not to attend.
Please verify your registration and payment status by using NOVAnet. You may also make a separate or additional credit card payment after registration by using NOVAnet.
Credit cards which are not in your name must be accompanied by written authorization of the card owner (not required for NOVAnet).
If you are a financial aid recipient registering in person, you must go to your home campus Financial Aid Office and Business Office to complete payment. If you have a contract, you must bring all necessary documents (agency authorization, etc.) to the campus Business Office. By using an agency or employer contract/authorization, you agree to accept responsibility for the full amount of tuition if the agency/employer does not pay within 30 days after invoice. If you are using a contract, it is your responsibility to notify your Business Office at the time of registration.
Students are strongly urged to come to campus and obtain a copy of their class schedule in order to verify enrollment and obtain refund deadline dates.
REFUNDS
Tuition refunds are not automatic, except for courses canceled by the College. If you wish to drop a course, you are encouraged to use NOVAnet--please refer to the NOVAnet Telephone Registration Worksheet and the "NOVAnet Helpful Hints" page in this schedule. You may also drop a course by completing a Registration Worksheet and submitting it to your home campus Admissions and Records Office in person or by mail or FAX. Campus FAX numbers are:

However the Registration Worksheet is submitted, it must be received in the Admissions and Records Office by the end of posted business hours on the last published drop date. If the drop form is received after that date, you will not be eligible for a tuition refund.
The last date that you may drop a course and receive a refund is indicated on your official Student Enrollment Receipt, which may be obtained from the Business Office (ELI refund dates are included in each ELI packet). If the College cancels a course or you drop a full 16-week term course by January 28 (or within the first 15% of a shorter term course), you are eligible for a refund and the course will be deleted from your record. No refunds will be made after the specified dates.
If you paid tuition fees by credit card, refunds due you will be credited to the credit card account if the card is presented to the Business Office at the time of drop. All other refunds are processed by the Virginia State Treasurer's Office after the published add/drop period and should be received by mail within six to eight weeks of that date. Refund checks, except those requested by students who presented employer contracts, will be made payable to the student.
Student financial aid recipients who withdraw from all courses may be eligible for a pro rata refund of tuition as provided by federal regulation. Such refunds are credited to student aid programs from which the student received aid. These policies are available from the Financial Aid and Business Offices.
PARKING
Permits are required for all cars parked in student lots ("B" lots) and may be purchased at campus Police and Public Safety Offices. At the Annandale Campus, they may be purchased in CG 226. The charge for a parking permit is $25.00 per semester. If your original sticker has been lost or stolen, you will be required to purchase another one. The summer session is considered to be a full semester for the sticker requirement.
If the College cancels your course, you will receive a full refund for your parking permit. Refunds must be requested from, and permits turned in to, the campus Police and Public Safety Office (at the Annandale Campus, to Parking Services, CG 226).
Refunds for parking permits will be made only if all classes are dropped and if requested within the published add/drop period by returning your permit to the campus Police/Parking Services Office.

FINANCIAL AID
NVCC has a student financial aid program to assist you with your educational expenses. This program is sponsored by the state and federal governments and the College.
To apply, contact the Financial Aid Office on your home campus. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), NVCC Financial Aid Application, and program placement in a certificate or degree program are necessary to determine eligibility. You must also meet other federal eligibility criteria. While most programs require enrollment for at least six semester credits, a limited number of programs are available to students enrolled for fewer than six semester credits. Financial aid applications received after the priority filing date will continue to be considered during the school year.
The NVCC Student Financial Aid Services brochure provides a complete description of the programs and application process for student aid. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible and to contact your home campus Financial Aid Office for additional information.
VETERANS BENEFITS
If you are applying for or are receiving educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, you must contact your home campus veterans advisor each semester to complete the necessary forms to establish and maintain your eligibility for benefits. Any changes must also be reported promptly to the veterans advisor. You will become certified for ELI courses after you complete them. See the College Catalog for further information.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION COURSES
The Community Education program offers non-credit courses to meet the needs of the local community. Fees charged for these courses cover the instructional and administrative costs. The courses are self-supporting. A listing of these courses may be found at the end of this schedule. Contact the Office of Continuing Education at the campus nearest you to request further information.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
Cooperative Education (Co-op) courses provide the opportunity for you to gain work experience in a position related to your academic program while earning a salary and academic credit.
Cooperative Education courses are listed with a 197 or 297 course number. In order to register for Cooperative Education courses, you must have written approval from a faculty member in your curriculum and be hired by an approved Co-op employer. See the College Catalog for more information.
Honors courses receive a special designation on student transcripts, and students who successfully complete a minimum of 24 hours in selected honors core courses will be awarded the Honors seal upon graduation.
Honors sections of courses are listed with other courses in the Schedule of Classes. Honors courses may be offered as a separate honors section of a course or as an option for selected students within an otherwise traditional course.
Students must have special permission to register for honors courses. To apply for admission, you must contact the chair of the campus honors committee (see below). You should meet at least one of the following criteria to be admitted: 1) a minimum of 92% on the reading and 94% on the writing sections of the computerized English placement test or 28 on reading and 33 on the writing sections of the paper and pencil English placement test or 2) a GPA of 3.5 or above at NVCC or 3) SAT scores of 1100 or above or 4) graduation in the top 10% of your high school graduating class or 5) special interest, aptitude, or life experiences that suggest the ability to learn creatively and independently within a course.

Annandale Campus Four - (4) Weekend College Program
Annandale Campus has a Four (4) Weekend College program in which you can
complete a semester course (3 credits) in four weekends by attending either
(1) Friday nights and Saturdays or (2) Saturdays and Sundays. Tuition and
fees are the same as the other courses. All Four-Weekend College courses have
a 97N or 98N section number. Immediately after registering for one or more of
these sections, you should stop by the division office to obtain the
assignment for the first Weekend College class meeting. Additionally, you
must report to the first class with your textbooks.
Friday/Saturday Four-Weekend College: These courses will be offered Fridays 6:00 - 9:40 P.M. and Saturdays 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. Registration closes on January 29 for Session I and April 2 for Session II.

Annandale Campus Saturday Program
Annandale Campus has a Saturday program in which you can complete a semester course by attending only on Saturdays for eight weeks or sixteen weeks. The eight-week Saturday courses have a 46N section number, and the sixteen-week Saturday courses have a 48N section number. Check the schedule for the exact dates and times that classes meet.

Health Technologies Programs - In order to register for courses in
the DNH, EMT (except EMT 106, 190), NUR, PTH (except PTH 100), RAD, and RTH
programs, you must have been previously accepted and program-placed in these
specific health programs and have division approval. The Health Careers
Opportunity Program (HCOP) and the Nursing Education Opportunity Program
(NEOP) provide assistance to Health Technologies students who are
academically or economically disadvantaged. Both programs implement

Loudoun Campus
Veterinary Technology Program - In order to register for courses in
the Veterinary Technology program, you must have been previously accepted and
program-placed in this program. Division approval is required for
registration in classes with the VET prefix.

Woodbridge Campus
PLS - PLS stands for "Personalized Learning System." Each PLS
course differs in format and is often self-paced. However, you should
reserve scheduled class time or check with specific instructors as to their
