          Course surveys firearms and
          ammunition, provides knowledge of
          handling and operation of firearms,
          and the legal requirements.
          Classroom and laboratory--5 hrs. per
          week.  Students will be required to
          visit several ranges and facilities.
          Students will be responsible for
          paying fees for range, firearm
          rental, ammunition, and sight and
          hearing equipment rental.
          Shooting is optional.
          Students completing the course will
          receive certification for these
          courses: NRA Home Firearm Safety,
          NRA Personal Protection, and
          Virginia Hunter Safety.

         VICTIMS AND CRIME

          relationships between victims of
          violent crime and their offenders,
          the criminal justice system, and
          society.  The aftermath of crime
          victimization will be explored along
          with victim concerns, issues and
          legislation.

         OFFICER SURVIVAL

          Course examines techniques which
          ensure the safety of the officer in
          routine and high-risk situations.
          This includes person, vehicle, and
          building searches, arrest procedures,
          vehicle and subject stops, vehicle
          and foot pursuits, response to calls
          for police service, and armed and
          unarmed confrontations with violent
          or threatening individuals.
          We will study officer safety from
          the criminal's perspective,
          including case studies.

          on prosecution of criminal cases.

          deception techniques, with focus on
          the polygraph.  Course will examine
          the underlying principles from the
          perspectives of behavior, physiology,
          and psychology.
          The instruction will also cover the
          relevant research, ethics,
          legislation, judicial rulings,
          countermeasures, limitations, and
          applications of the various methods.

          This course is designed to make the
          student aware of how liability
          affects the security component of an
          organization and the overall
          organization, and the steps he or she
          can take to reduce or negate
          liability.
          Some examples of steps that can be
          taken include conducting a security
          survey, implementing training
          programs, and developing policy and
          procedures.  Class meets SEPT 27-28
          and OCT 4-5.

          This course will introduce the
          student to the various types of
          disasters, major events and crisis
          situations which confront public
          safety agencies:  natural and man-
          made disasters, hostage/barricade
          incidents, VIP security and other
          crisis situations.  will discuss
          tactics, equipment, and resources.
          Students will be asked to
          participate in a mock crisis
          situation.  Classes meet on OCT 26
          and NOV 2, 1996.

         VIOLENCE: WORKPLACE

          This two day program will examine
          the causes and effects of workplace
          violence.  In addition, the student
          will be introduced to the
          psychological profile of individuals
          who commit these acts and reasons for
          their behavior.  A discussion will
          also address prevention techinques
          from a security perspective.
          Classes meet on NOV 9 and 16, 1996.
