Welcome to NVCC’s New Printed Schedule of Classes!

Our New Look
Beginning Fall 2006, the print schedule was redesigned in two columns instead of three, making it less crowded and easier to read.   We've also added color to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Important Differences in the Printed Schedule

Most class notes and details under each class have been by a series of symbols.  Each symbol is explained below in detail, and the legend at the bottom of each page reminds you what they mean.

The symbol “!” indicates that you need to look at the course listing online to find the important details listed there.

There are two ways to find courses online:

  • Go to the Schedule Search located at http://www.nvcc.edu/schedule/crs2072/Select the search options of the class you want, click SEARCH, and scroll down until you find the right course—all the details will be printed under the course.

  • Log onto NovaConnect and search for the course by course prefix and number, or by class number.  To reveal the course information, you must click on the "page" symbol at the far right of the class listing, and the information will appear.  Print this page if you want to keep the information handy.

Class Symbols
Pay attention to the symbols following class listings. They indicate that there is additional information explained at length in each course’s online listing. An explanatory key for the symbols is printed at the bottom of each page of the Schedule of Classes, with a more complete explanation listed here:

info online symbol– Important Info Online:  Important details about this course are included in the online listing.

online course symbol – Online course:  The course is taught entirely online, with the possible exception of an introductory meeting and/or exam.  A reliable computer and Internet connection is essential for this course.

hybrid course symbol– Hybrid Course: The course combines several class meetings with online instruction you would do from home or a campus computer lab.  A reliable computer and Internet connection is essential for this course.  See course details online for specifications.

H – Honors Course:  A more challenging version of the course, with additional requirements.  See the Honors section for a complete explanation of Honors Courses and their requirements.

permission required symbol– Instructor’s Permission Required:  You must speak to the instructor to get permission to enroll in the course; otherwise, enrollment is blocked.

restricted admission symbol– Restricted Admission:  The course is only for people admitted to a particular program or who meet other pre-existing qualifications.  Contact the academic department for more information.

O – Off-campus location:  The course is not taught in the main campus facility.  See Off-Campus Locations, for details and addresses.

W – Weekend Course:  The course meets entirely during the Friday evening through Sunday timeframe.  It may run the entire semester or may only last a few weeks.

$ – Additional Fee Required:  The course involves additional expenses beyond the cost of tuition.  Examples are off-site facility fees for golf, scuba diving, or bowling; or the hourly fees for applied music courses.

Specific to Extended Learning Institute:

in-person symbol In-Person Meetings:  The € indicates a Distance Learning (ELI) course that also requires in-person class meetings such as labs.  See the online course listing for specific dates, times and locations.

enova symboleNova:  For ELI (Distance Learning) courses.  This course requires online class meetings at preset times at your home computer.  Required headset and microphone can be purchased at campus bookstores.  A reliable computer with Internet connection is essential for this course.

print-based symbol - Print-Based Course:  ELI course uses textbooks, study guides, and an assortment of non-Internet technologies such as video, voicemail, and CD-Rom.

How the Schedule Works

The NVCC Schedule of Classes lists courses for the semester alphabetically for all six campuses, the Extended Learning Institute, and the Arlington and Reston Centers. You may select your courses from any campus for any day or time, unless otherwise noted. Simply choose the section you wish to take and copy the information down on your Class Schedule Worksheet.

The printed schedule is subject to change. Always check the online listing, which may be updated after the schedule is printed.

CLASS TIMES

Make sure your class times do not overlap, even by a few minutes—you will not be able to register for classes that conflict.
