The Extended Learning Institute (ELI) offers distance learning courses to students who prefer to study independently. Most coursework may be completed at home. It is important to schedule at least 2-3 hours of work per course credit per week for each course (a three-credit course requires 6-9 hours per week). Each ELI course uses one or more of the following media: Internet, CD, videotape, DVD, cable TV, live eNOVA virtual (web) classroom, audiotape, streaming audio and video, and voice mail. A few courses require class meetings or labs. Exams are taken at any campus Testing Center. In limited situations, a proctor from outside the College may administer the exams.

Admission/Enrollment. If you are new to NVCC or returning after three years of non-attendance, you must complete an Application for Admission. If you are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition rates, you must also complete the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates. You may apply online using the NovaConnect Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect, or use the forms in this schedule. You may enroll in ELI courses through campus enrollment procedures, including NovaConnect Web and NovaConnect Telephone, the same as for any NVCC course. Find the class numbers in the course listings on the following pages. Please check to make sure your mailing address is current at the time you enroll.

ELI courses start at the beginning of the semester; many ELI courses have additional sections starting throughout the semester. When course capacity limits are reached, ELI sections are closed to further enrollment.

Important Dates. Courses shown in this Schedule will begin on May 15, 2006, unless otherwise indicated. There will be no refunds for these courses after May 27, 2006. For additional sections that start later in the semester, check the course listings on the NovaConnect Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect.

ELI Orientation. An online orientation is available at http://eli.nvcc.edu/orientation. An orientation video is also available in campus LRS facilities and on local cable TV stations at 12:30 PM every Sunday. Enroll in ELI’s SDV 100 and LBR 105 early in your college studies. Both courses will help you succeed at NVCC.

Getting Started. ELI courses require you to start working according to the start date on the course information you receive in the mail to avoid administrative withdrawal. To begin your course, go to http://eli.nvcc.edu/courses.htm. If you do not have Internet access (workstations are available at all campuses and public libraries), contact ELI at (703) 323-3347. You will also receive course enrollment confirmation in the mail. If you do not receive this confirmation by 7 days after the course is scheduled to begin, contact ELI enrollment immediately at (703) 323-3368.

Obtaining Textbooks and Other Course Materials. You may order textbooks and other course materials by phone, fax, web, or mail. Call 1-888-SHIP-TEXT for more information. You may also purchase course materials in the ELI section of any campus bookstore. Some materials may be ordered online at http://direct.mbsbooks.com/novaeli.htm.

Telecourse Information. . If you enroll in a telecourse, broadcasts begin on local cable television the week of May 15, 2006. If you enroll after these broadcasts have begun, you may view missed programs at campus Learning Resource Services (LRS) facilities. Some telecourses are also broadcast as Overnight Blockfeed, some are available for rental, and some are available on the Internet. For a complete list of viewing options, see the Telecourse Broadcast Schedule at http://eli.nvcc.edu/tvschedule.htm.

Student E-mail. All NVCC students receive a student e-mail account through the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). You must use this account for all course-related e-mail correspondence. For information on how to set up and access your account, go to http://www.nvcc.edu/ithd/studentmail.html.

Course Length. ELI courses are generally 16 weeks in length. However, some distance courses have an accelerated 8-week option available. If your work is satisfactory and you have completed approximately 50% of the required work as specified by the instructor, you may request in writing additional time to complete your course. See your ELI course information for details.

Special Information. When enrolling for sequential courses, e.g., ENG 111 and ENG 112, sign up for only one course at a time. If you failed an ELI course, you may not re-enroll in that same section without permission of the instructor. To take more than 12 credits simultaneously through ELI, you must obtain permission from the Director of the Extended Learning Institute. Call (703) 323-3347 for information.

Financial Aid Recipients. Most ELI courses can be used to determine eligibility for financial aid or loan deferments. Contact the College Financial Aid Office for information.

Auditing ELI Courses. If you choose to audit an ELI course, you are not required to do any assignments and you will not receive credit. Your grade will not appear on your College transcript. The regular tuition rate is charged.

Refund Period. You may drop an ELI course for refund no later than the Last Refund Date listed in the course information sent to you (see Important Dates). Follow campus enrollment procedures, including NovaConnect online and telephone, to drop courses. No refunds will be made after the specified dates.

ELI Course Withdrawal. You may withdraw from an ELI course without grade penalty any time during the time period specified by the College. Details are included in the course information sent to you. Students who do not send in their minimum required assignments as specified by the instructor by the Last Date for Withdrawal will be administratively withdrawn from the course with no refund.

Courses for Degrees and Certificates. ELI offers all courses required for:

  • degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management (including Public Management Specialization), General Studies, Information Technology (Microcomputer Specialization), and Liberal Arts

  • certificates in Bookkeeping, Public Management, Small Business Management, and Professional Writing for Business, Government and Industry.

PLEASE NOTE

Distance learning is NOT for everyone. If reading is difficult for you or if your schedule does not permit regular study, ELI distance learning courses may not be appropriate for you. Please look over your course materials as soon as you get them. If you decide there is too much work, make sure to request a refund before your refund period ends. The self-quiz on ELI’s Web site may help you:http://eli.nvcc.edu/eliforme/eliforme.asp.

ELI Distance Learning Courses...

  • take as much or more time and effort as comparable classroom-based courses; plan to spend at least 2-3 hours per course credit per week for each course (a three-credit course requires 6-9 hours per week).

  • require more reading and more written assignments and may have assignment deadlines that you must meet.

  • require several supervised exams.

  • sometimes require on-campus work.

  • must be completed in 16 weeks.

Internet: Most ELI courses use the Internet for assignments, quizzes, and/or discussion. See the distance learning Web site at http://eli.nvcc.edu for more information. Prior experience using an Internet connection and a browser is required for these courses. You must use a standard Web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or later) or Netscape Navigator (version 4.8 or later) You must enable cookies and Java to access most courses. America Online (AOL) software is not standard; AOL users should install a standard browser to use after connecting with AOL.

eNOVA (Powered by Centra): While most distance course work is completed independently, some courses require weekly scheduled web meetings using eNOVA virtual classroom. These ELI courses are called online hybrid courses. Using a home computer (PC only; not MAC compatible), a microphone headset, and Internet connection, students attend regular online sessions at pre-designated times. (See individual course notes or your instructor for meeting details). Minimum technology requirements include a computer (PC with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, or XP; P133+ MHz, 32+ MB memory; and 800x600 or higher display resolution); a broadband Internet connection (Cable, DSL, T-1 line; 28.8 kbps dial-up service is not recommended); Internet browser (Internet Explorer 4.01 or later); a computer headset with microphone; and an NVCC-provided username and password. You are required to review the technology overview/directions at http://www.nvcc.edu/depts/centra/welcome.asp?u=part&n=part and perform a system check http://www.nvcc.edu/depts/centra/techreq.asp at least two days prior to your first eNOVA session. Contact the NVCC eNOVA Technology Support Line (703-323-3330) for technical support and your instructor for course details. An orientation may be required.

Parking Information. You may want to consider purchasing a semester parking permit if you think you will need to be on campus frequently to use the library, take a test, purchase materials at the campus bookstore, etc. Detailed information is available in the General Information section of this Schedule.
