EXTENDED LEARNING INSTITUTE (ELI) AND OTHER DISTANCE LEARNING OPTIONS

[ NVCC Home Page | Schedule Search | Table of Contents | Previous Page | Next Page ]

The Extended Learning Institute (ELI) offers courses to students who prefer to study independently. Most coursework may be completed at home. It is important to schedule at least 2-3 hours of work per course credit per week for each course (a three-credit course requires 6-9 hours per week). Each ELI course uses one or more of the following media: videotape, cable TV, World Wide Web, computer programs on disk or CD-ROM, audiotape or CD, and voice mail. Exams are taken on campus in a Testing Center. Please check the hours of the campus Testing Center prior to taking tests. In limited situations, a proctor from outside the College may administer the exams.

Admission/Registration. If you are new to NVCC or returning after three years of non-attendance, you must complete an Application for Admission. If you are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition rates, you must also complete the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates. You may apply on-line using the NovaConnect Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect, or use the forms in this Schedule. You may register for ELI courses through campus registration procedures, including NovaConnect on-line and telephone registration, the same as for any NVCC course. Find the class/index numbers in the campus course listings. (Note: If your address has changed since the last time you registered, please contact the ELI office.)

If you are interested only in ELI courses and do not have Internet access, you may apply and register directly through ELI. ELI cannot accept registrations for campus classroom courses. Fill out the Registration and Tuition Worksheet located in this Schedule and mail it with your completed application to the Extended Learning Institute, Attention: Registration, Northern Virginia Community College, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia 22003-3796. You may pay by check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, or agency contract. For more information, visit our Web site at http://eli.nvcc.edu or call 703-323-3368. ELI registration hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Many ELI courses have multiple sections starting throughout the semester. When course capacity limits are reached, ELI sections are closed to further registration. If you register after broadcasts of your telecourse have begun, you may view missed programs in a campus Learning Resource Services (LRS) laboratory, on rented videotapes, or from the Overnight Blockfeed on some cable TV systems. See the Telecourse Broadcast Schedule for details.

Important Dates. Courses shown in this Schedule will begin on January 12, 2004. Unless a different date is indicated in the course description, registration closes on January 23, 2004. There will be no refunds for these courses after January 23, 2004. For additional sections that start later in the semester, check the course listings on the NovaConnect Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect.

ELI Orientation. The ELI orientation is available online at http://eli.nvcc.edu/orientation. An orientation video is also available in campus LRS laboratories and on local cable TV stations at 12:30PM every Sunday.

Getting Started. To begin your course, go to http://eli.nvcc.edu/courses.htm. If you do not have Internet access (workstations are available at all campuses and public libraries), contact ELI at (703) 323-3347. You will also receive course enrollment confirmation in the mail. If you do not receive this confirmation by 10 days after the course is scheduled to begin, contact ELI registration immediately at (703) 323-3368.

Course Length. ELI courses are 16 weeks in length. You may request more time if your work is satisfactory and you have completed approximately 50% of the required work as specified by the instructor. See your ELI course information for details.

Special Information. When registering for sequential courses, e.g., ENG 111 and ENG 112, sign up for only one course at a time. If you failed an ELI course, you may not re-enroll in that same section without permission of the instructor. To take more than 12 credits simultaneously through ELI, you must obtain permission from the Director of the Extended Learning Institute. Call 703-323-3347 for information.

Financial Aid Recipients. Most ELI courses can be used to determine eligibility for financial aid or loan deferments. Contact the College Financial Aid Office for information.

Auditing ELI Courses. If you choose to audit an ELI course, you are not required to do any assignments and you will not receive credit. Your grade will not appear on your College transcript. The regular tuition rate is charged.

Obtaining Textbooks and Other Course Materials. You may order textbooks and other course materials by phone, fax, Web or mail. Call 1-888-SHIP-TEXT for more information. You may also purchase course materials in the ELI section of any campus bookstore. Some materials may be ordered online at http://direct.mbsbooks.com/novaeli.htm.

Refund Period. Requests for refunds must be made in writing to ELI and postmarked within the time period specified by the College. Details are provided in the course information sent to you.

ELI Course Withdrawal. You may withdraw from the course without grade penalty any time during the time period specified by the College by writing to ELI. Details are included in the course information sent to you. Students who do not send in their minimum required assignments as specified by the instructor by the Last Date for Withdrawal will be administratively withdrawn from the course with no refund.

Parking Information. You may want to consider purchasing a semester parking permit if you think you will need to be on campus frequently to use the library, take a test, purchase materials at the campus bookstore, etc. Detailed information is available in the General Information section of this Schedule.
