PHYSICS

PHY 101-102 (4 CR.) (4 CR.)

INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS I-II

Recommended prerequisite is satisfactory placement score for ENG 111. Surveys general principles of physics. Includes topics such as force and motion, energy, heat, sound, (PHY 101) light, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics (PHY 102). Involves using arithmetic and some simple algebra, mostly in laboratory. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 170 (3 CR.)

INTRODUCTION TO MICROELECTRONICS PROCESSES

Introduces the process of precision manufacturing through its applications in the semiconductor industry. Covers an overview of the industry and processing environment, semiconductor materials and their properties, safety and contamination control, and manufacturing processes including wafer preparation, oxidation/diffusion/chemical vapor deposition, photolithography, engineering methods and quality control. Lecture 3 hours per week.

PHY 201-202 (4 CR.) (4 CR.)

GENERAL COLLEGE PHYSICS I-II

Prerequisite is MTH 163 or equivalent and satisfactory placement score for ENG 111. Teaches fundamental principles of physics. Covers mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, electricity, optics, magnetism, and selected topics in modern physics. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 231-232 (5 CR.) (5 CR.)

GENERAL UNIVERSITY PHYSICS I-II

Prerequisite for PHY 231 is MTH 173 or division approval. Prerequisite for PHY 232 is MTH 174 or division approval. Teaches principles of classical physics. Includes mechanics, wave phenomena, heat, electricity, magnetism, and optics, with extended coverage of selected topics. Includes recitation as part of the lecture. Lecture 4 hours (includes recitation). Laboratory 2 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 241-242 (4 CR.) (4 CR.)

UNIVERSITY PHYSICS I-II

Prerequisite is MTH 173, corequisite is MTH 174. Teaches principles of classical and modern physics. Includes mechanics, wave phenomena, heat, electricity, magnetism, relativity, and nuclear physics. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

PHY 243 (4 CR.)

MODERN PHYSICS

Prerequisites are PHY 241 and PHY 242 or equivalent. For majors requiring calculus-based physics. Teaches principles of modern physics. Includes in-depth coverage of relativity, quantum physics, and solid state and nuclear physics. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 5 hours per week. Additional 1 credit recitation hour recommended.

PHY 270 (4 CR.)

PHYSICAL PROCESSES - MICROELECTRONICS

Prerequisites are CHM 111-112, MTH 271-272 or MTH 173-174, PHY 170, and PHY 201-202. Presents an advanced treatment of the physical processes used in the field of microelectronics: topics include solid state materials, microelectronics devices, thermal properties of solids, conductivity in metals, lasers, semiconductors and superconductors, as well as equipment used in the manufacturing process. Includes detection systems, RF power and plasma generation, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and sensors. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.
