HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
HIT 100 (1 CR.)
INTRODUCTION TO THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
Introduces the organization of the health care dELIvery
system with emphasis on types of providers and the role that accrediting
and licensing bodies play in the dELIvery of health care. Lecture
1 hour per week.
HIT 110 (3 CR.)
INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN PATHOLOGY
Introduces the basic concepts, terminology, etiology,
and characteristics of pathological processes. Lecture 3 hours per
week.
HIT 111 (3 CR.)
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY I
Introduces the student to the language used in the
health record. Includes a system-by-system review of anatomic, disease,
and operative terms, abbreviations, radiography procedures, laboratory
tests, and pharmacology terms. Lecture 3 hours per week.
HIT 115 (3 CR.)
AMBULATORY CODING AND CLASSIFICATION
Focuses on disease and procedure classification
in the ambulatory care environment. Develops basic coding and classification
knowledge using ICD-9-CM and CPT. Not intended for HIT majors. Lecture
3 hours per week.
HIT 121-122 (4 CR.) (4 CR.)
MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION I-II
Prerequisite is ability to type 40 words per minute.
Develops skills in the transcription of various medical record reports,
use of transcription references and proof reading reports. Evaluates
the productivity and organization of transcription departments/services
and the quality of transcribed reports and equipment utilized. Lecture
1 hour. Laboratory 6 hours. Total 7 hours per week.

HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Focuses on microcomputer applications, information
systems and software in the Healthcare environment. Lecture 3 hours
per week.
HIT 141-142 (3 CR.) (3 CR.)
FUNDAMENTALS OF HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS I-II
Prerequisite is IST 117 or permission of instructor.
Focuses on health data collection, storage, retrieval, and reporting
systems, with emphasis on the role of the computer in accomplishing
these functions. Lecture 3 hours per week.
HIT 143 (2 CR.)
MANAGING ELECTRONIC BILLING IN A MEDICAL PRACTICE
Presents practical knowledge on use of computer
technology in medical practice management. Develops basic skills
in preparation of universal billing claim. Explores insurance claim
processing issues. Lecture 2 hours per week.
HIT 149 (2 CR.)
INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
Introduces principles of administrative practice
management. Examines patient scheduling, records management, financial
systems, and other office systems/procedures. Focuses on the development
of organizational and decision making skills utilized by the practice
manager. Lecture 2 hours per week.
HIT 151 (2 CR.)
REIMBURSEMENT ISSUES IN MEDICAL PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
Introduces major reimbursement systems in the United
States. Focuses on prospective payment systems, managed care, and
documentation necessary for appropriate reimbursement. Emphasizes
management of practice to avoid fraud. Lecture 2 hours per week.

HEALTH DATA CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS
Prerequisites are HIT 110 and BIO 141 or NAS 150
or permission of instructor. Focuses on disease and procedure classification
systems currently utilized for collecting health data for the purposes
of statistical research and financial reporting. Lecture 4 hours.
Laboratory 2 hours. Total 6 hours per week.
HIT 220 (2 CR.)
HEALTH STATISTICS
Prerequisite is HIT 141 or permission of instructor.
Introduces the student to basic statistical principles as applied
in the health care environment. Lecture 2 hours per week.
HIT 225 (2 CR.)
QUALITY ASSURANCE IN HEALTH CARE
Prerequisites are HIT 141 and HIT 215 or permission
of instructor. Presents medical care evaluation techniques, utilization
review activities, peer review organization requirements, and risk
management. Lecture 2 hours per week.
HIT 226 (2 CR.)
LEGAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH RECORD DOCUMENTATION
Prerequisite is HIT 141 or permission of instructor.
Presents the legal requirements associated with health record documentation.
Emphasizes the policies and procedures concerning the protection
of the confidentiality of the patient's health record. Lecture 2
hours per week.

HEALTH RECORD APPLICATIONS I-II
Prerequisite is HIT 141 and corequisites are HIT
142 and HIT 215. Uses an integrated approach to practicing health
records skills in a clinical environment. Emphasizes the use of
the microcomputer in accomplishing problem-solving tasks. Clinical
6 hours per week.
HIT 249 (3 CR.)
SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR HIT
Introduces supervision and management principles
with emphasis on the application of these principles in the health
information setting. Lecture 3 hours per week.
HIT 250 (4 CR.)
HEALTH DATA CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS I: ICD-9-CM
Prerequisites are HIT 110 and HIT 111 plus either
BIO 141-142 or NAS 150 or permission of instructor. Focuses on disease
and procedure classification using ICD-9-CM. This system is currently
utilized for collecting health data for the purpose of statistical
research and financial reporting. Lecture 4 hours per week.
HIT 251 (3 CR.)
CLINICAL PRACTICE I
Supervises student practice in health information
activities conducted in a variety of clinical settings. Clinical
6 hours per week.
HIT 252 (3 CR.)
CLINICAL PRACTICE II
Prepares the Health Information Technology student
to perform all functions commonly allocated to health record services.
Gives practice in various settings under the supervision of a clinical
practice supervisor. Clinical practice at various facilities 6 hours
per week.
HIT 255 (2 CR.)
HEALTH DATA CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS II: CPT
Prerequisites are HIT 110 and HIT 111 plus either
BIO 141-142 or NAS 150 or permission of instructor. Focuses on procedure
classification using CPT. This system is currently utilized for
collecting health data for the purposes of statistical research
and financial reporting. Lecture 2 hours per week.
HIT 260 (2 CR.)
PHARMACOLOGY FOR HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Introduces the general study of drug classifications,
uses, and effects as required to perform health data collection
and retrieval tasks. Lecture 2 hours per week.
