EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

EMT 106 (6 CR.)

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN/BASIC

Prerequisite is CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level. Prepares student for certification as a Virginia and National Registry EMT/B. Includes all aspects of pre-hospital basic life support as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National Curriculum for Emergency Medical Technicians/Basic. Lecture 4 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 8 hours per week.

EMT 109 (1 CR.)

CPR FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

Provides training in all phases of adult, pediatric, and infant resuscitation procedures. Includes introduction to cardiac pathophysiology and preventive measures. Designed to prepare students for certification by the American Heart Association at the Health Care Provider level. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 120 (1 CR.)

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR COURSE

Prerequisite is current certification in American Heart Association HealthCare Provider CPR or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer. Prepares students for certification as an instructor in Basic Life Support (BLS) as defined by the American Heart Association. Lecture 1 hour per week.

BASIC TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT

Prerequisite is EMT, CCT, Paramedic, trauma Nurse, or Physician. Prepares students for certification as a Basic Trauma Life Support Provider (BTLS) as defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 122 (1 CR.)

BASIC TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR

Prerequisite is current certification as a Basic Trauma Life Support Provider. Prepares the student for certification as a Basic Trauma Support Provider (BTLS) Instructor as defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 123 (1 CR.)

PEDIATRIC BASIC TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT

Prerequisite is EMT, CCT, Paramedic, Trauma Nurse, Physician. Prepares students for certification as a Pediatric Basic Trauma Life Support Provider (PBTLS) as defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 146 (3 CR.)

MEDICAL ASPECTS OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENTS

Describes the emergency medical services response to hazardous materials incidents. Includes hazard recognition; principles of toxicology; personnel protection; incident command; and assessment, decontamination, and treatment of patients. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 155 (2 CR.)

BASIC EMT/B REFRESHER

Prerequisite is current EMT/B certification. Reviews material covered in the basic emergency medical technician/ambulance course. Emphasizes critique of basic skills and recent developments in the area of pre-hospital basic life support. Required for Virginia and National Registry recertification as an EMT/B. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

EMT 161 (3 CR.)

EMS LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION I

Discusses the history and development of emergency medical services (EMS), EMS system design, components, and funding sources. Presents leadership and supervision topics for first level EMS managers, including planning, decision making, interpersonal communications, time and stress management, and critical incident debriefing. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 162 (3 CR.)

EMS LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION II

Prerequisite is EMT 161. Continues EMS leadership and supervision topics, including performance evaluation, health and safety regulations, current legal-medical issues, concepts of public education, and recruiting and attrition procedures. Also introduces multiple casualty incident management. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 180 (4 CR.)

ALS FOUNDATIONS

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification and satisfactory scores on Math and English Placement examinations. Pre- or corequisites are NAS 150 (or equivalent), EMT 183 and EMT 186. Begins preparation for an advanced life support provider as defined by the Department of Transportation's National Paramedic Curriculum. Includes roles/responsibilities, legal aspects, medical incident command, detailed patient assessment, and airway management. Lecture 4 hours per week.

EMT 181 (3 CR.)

ALS TRAUMA CARE

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 180, EMT 183 and EMT 186. Corequisites are EMT 121, 184, and 187. Continues DOT's National Paramedic Curriculum. Includes ALS pharmacology, drug and fluid administration with emphasis on trauma patient assessment and management. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 182 (4 CR.)

ALS MEDICAL CARE

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 180, EMT 183, and EMT 186. Corequisites are EMT 185, 188, 216, and 251. Continues DOT's National Paramedic Curriculum. Emphasizes assessment and management of medical modalities to include cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, endocrine, and other related medical complaints. Lecture 4 hours per week.

EMT 183 (1 CR.)

ALS SKILLS I

Prerequisite is EMT/B Certification. Corequisites are EMT 180 and EMT 186. Focuses on the development of advanced life support skills for assessing and managing trauma, medical and specialty patients. Provides scenario practice in assessment based management. Laboratory 2 hours per week.

ALS SKILLS II

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification EMT 180 and EMT 186. Corequisites are EMT 181 and EMT 187. Focuses on the development of advanced life support skills for assessing and managing trauma, medical and specialty patients. Provides scenario practice in assessment based management. Laboratory 4 hours per week.

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 180, 183, and 186. Focuses on the development of advanced life support skills for assessing and managing trauma, medical and specialty patients. Provides scenario practice in assessment based management. Laboratory 4 hours per week.

EMT 186 (2 CR.)

ALS CLINICAL EDUCATION I

Prerequisite is EMT/B Certification. Corequisites are EMT 180 and EMT 183. Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and DELIvery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Laboratory 4 hours per week.

EMT 187 (2 CR.)

ALS CLINICAL EDUCATION II

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 180, 183 and 186. Corequisites are EMT 181 and EMT 184. Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and DELIvery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Laboratory 4 hours per week.

EMT 188 (3 CR.)

ALS CLINICAL EDUCATION III

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 180, 183, and 186. Corequisites are EMT 182 and EMT 185. Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and DELIvery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Laboratory 6 hours per week.

EMT 215 (4 CR.)

PRINCIPLES OF EXTRICATION

Prerequisite is EMT/B certification. Focuses on the practical evolutions utilized for vehicle extrication and basic and light duty rescue. Includes techniques of vehicle, water, vertical, and trench rescue; as well as electrical emergencies; bus, aircraft, and subway crashes; radiation hazards; and elevator accidents. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

EMT 216 (3 CR.)

PRE-HOSPITAL PHYSIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

Prerequisite is EMT 106 or equivalent. May be taken concurrently with EMT 231 or EMT 232. Focuses on the application of normal anatomy and physiological phenomena to ill and injured individuals. Emphasizes the analysis and interpretation of physiological data to assist in patient assessment and management. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 223 (1 CR.)

PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT

Prerequisite is CCT or paramedic, RN, respiratory therapists and physicians. Must have current certification in Healthcare Provider CPR. Prepares students for certification as a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider as defined by the American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 227 (1 CR.)

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT DRUG DOSAGE CALCULATIONS

Focuses on the techniques to accurately calculate and administer the drugs necessary to provide advanced life support emergency care. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 228 (1 CR.)

PARAMEDIC REVIEW

Prerequisite is ELIgibility for National Registry Paramedic testing or approval by program head. Focuses on review of selected knowledge and skill components identified in the DOAT National Paramedic Curriculum for the purpose of being better prepared for the National Registry for Paramedic Examination. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 229 (1 CR.)

PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR

Prerequisite is PALS certification. Prepares students for certification as an instructor in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as defined by the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 251 (1 CR.)

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER

Prerequisite is EMT-Cardiac certification, RN or equivalent. Prepares for certification as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider. Follows course as defined by the American Heart Association. Lecture 1 hour per week.

EMT 274 (3 CR.)

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

Focuses on the pathological processes of disease with the emphasis on the anatomical and physiological alterations of the human body by systems. Includes diagnosis and management appropriate to the advanced health care provider in and out of the hospital environment. Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 280 (2 CR.)

ALS SPECIALTY CARE

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 121, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 216 and 251. Corequisites are EMT 123, 223, 281, and 282. Concludes didactic portion of DOT's National Paramedic Curriculum. Focuses on the assessment and management of specialty patients including behavioral, obstetrical, pediatric, geriatric, and the chronically ill. Lecture 2 hours per week.

EMT 281 (2 CR.)

ALS SKILLS IV

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 121, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, and 216. Corequisites are EMT 280 and EMT 282. Focuses on the development of advanced life support skills for assessing and managing trauma, medical and specialty patients. Provides scenario practice in assessment based management. Laboratory 4 hours per week.

EMT 282 (3 CR.)

ADVANCED CLINICAL EDUCATION IV

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 121, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, and 216. Corequisites are EMT 280 and EMT 281. Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and DELIvery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Laboratory 6 hours per week.

EMT 283 (6 CR.)

ALS FIELD INTERNSHIP

Prerequisites are EMT/B Certification, EMT 121, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 216, and 251. Corequisites are EMT 123, 223, 280, 281, and 282. Provides supervised direct patient contact on out-of-hospital advanced life support units. Laboratory 12 hours per week.
