Transfer Credits/Prior Degrees/International Transcripts

Transfer your credits for application toward your NOVA program if you have a prior degree(s), completed coursework from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education or you have international credits.

Transfer Credit

NOVA accepts credit from other regionally accredited U.S. colleges and universities that is comparable to coursework required in your NOVA program and for which you have earned a grade of “C” or above. More details can be found in the CPL Manual (Section 1).

You must submit an official copy of your transcript(s) to a NOVA campus Student Services Center and complete the online Transfer Credit Evaluation Request Form 125-049E to have your transfer credits evaluated.

Once your documents are submitted, your transcripts will be processed within four to six weeks. All official transcript evaluations are handled by the College Records Office. You can contact the College Records Office by emailing AsktheCRO@nvcc.edu. When you email them, please include your NOVA student ID number. All communication from the CRO regarding the evaluation of your transcripts will be sent to your NOVA student email address.

Please visit the College Records Office (CRO) website for more information about transfer credit evaluation.

Prior Degrees

If you graduated with an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. (in a non-career-technical field), any baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited United States institution of higher education, you are considered to have fulfilled the general education, PED, and SDV requirements as applicable to your NOVA program. Some NOVA program credit requirements vary, so fewer credits will apply.

  • The number of credits awarded in social/behavioral science varies according to the number required in a specific program.
  • Students in the Allied Health, Computer Science, Engineering, IT, Mathematics, Nursing and Science programs must complete the specified math requirements.
  • Engineering, Allied Health, and Nursing students are required to complete the specified science requirements.
  • Dental Hygiene students are required to meet the specified oral communication course to meet CODA requirements.
  • Nursing students are required to meet the specified psychology requirement.

International Transcripts

If you completed credits or a degree from an international school, you need to have your transcripts evaluated by an approved international transcript evaluating agency first before you submit them to NOVA for evaluation.

NOVA accepts international transcript evaluations from either World Education Services (WES) or International Education Research Foundation (IERF). NOVA will also accept AACRAO transcript evaluations dated prior to August 2016 and on a case-by-case basis, NACES approved evaluations performed prior to August 2014. You may only submit one evaluation during your academic career at NOVA. You must submit your original transcript(s) to one of these organizations and pay for the course-by-course evaluation. Having your transcripts evaluated by one of these agencies does not guarantee that your credits will apply to your NOVA degree program.

Once your transcript(s) are evaluated, you must submit an official copy of your evaluated transcript(s) to a NOVA campus Student Services Center and complete the online Transfer Credit Evaluation Request Form 125-049E to have your transfer credits evaluated by NOVA.

Once your documents are submitted, your transcripts will be processed within four to six weeks. All official transcript evaluations are handled by the College Records Office.
