SCAM II!!!
From Division of Purchases & Supplies: Recently an end user at a State Agency received a brochure from JPC (Joint Purchasing Corporation) which indicated that JPC had numerous contracts which various companies for the purchasing of commodities. SCAM III!!!
TOLL FRAUD and TELEPHONE ABUSE!!! In the last few weeks, toll fraud and abuse has risen. A caller identifies them self as a telephone company technician and instructs the person called to "test the line" by dialing 9-0-# and hanging up. Dialing 9-0-# (or any other fictitious number or extension that start with a nine and a zero), does NOT perform ANY test function. These instructions actually assist scam artists who connect to an operator. The variation here is that the pound sign speeds up that connection. Having reached the operator through the call transfer, the caller proceeds to make "free" calls (at the agency's expense).
Do NOT transfer any calls with this request.
Telephone companies will not process credits for these calls. Agencies have been liable for full payment of the charges.
All College employees are also reminded to observe the telephone use
guidelines published in the front of the College telephone directory and
in the Administrative Procedures Manual.
