1996-97

 

The total number of graduates by campus is presented in Table 1. There were 2,753 graduates in 1997, an increase of 172, or 7 percent over 1996. While the Alexandria, Annandale, and Woodbridge campuses showed increases in the number of graduates over 1996, the Loudoun and Manassas campuses each showed a decrease.

AGE

Between 1992 and 1997 there has been a gradual increase in the percentage of graduates between the ages of 25 and 59 years. Graduates in the 30-44 age group increased from 34% to 38% while those in the 25-29 age group increased from 23% to 25%. From 1996 to 1997, the percentage of graduates between 22 and 24 years declined from 21% to 17%.

ETHNICITY AND RACE

There was no change in the ethnic and racial makeup between the graduating class of 1996 and 1997. Between 1992 and 1997 Black and Hispanic graduation increased from 8% to 12% and 5% to 7% respectively. White graduation on the other hand, decreased from 75% in 1992 to 69% in 1997.

Between 1996 and 1997 there was a 1 percent increase in female graduates and a corresponding decrease in male graduates.

RESIDENCE

As in prior years, almost all of the graduates were residents of Virginia (94.9 percent).

AWARDS

Between 1996 and 1997 there was a two percent increase in occupational-technical awards and a corresponding decline in transfer awards. This is revealed in Table 6.

TEN LARGEST PROGRAMS

Awards were granted in 65 majors in 1997. The ten most common majors, as listed in Table 7, account for 72 percent of the total in 1997 and 1996. The most noticeable change from 1996 was the increase in the number of Career Studies awards (90), General Studies degrees (77), and Nursing degrees (52). Business Management was again among the top ten degrees in 1997.

CAMPUS RESULTS

AGE

The Loudoun and Manassas campuses had the largest percentages (31 and 34 percent respectively) of graduates under 25 years old. The Alexandria and Annandale campuses had the largest percentages (83 percent and 75 percent) of graduates 25 years old and over. At Alexandria (58 percent) and at Woodbridge (51 percent) of graduates were 30 years old or older.

ETHNICITY AND RACE

Alexandria had the highest percentage of minority graduates (49 percent) followed by Annandale and Woodbridge with (32 percent). At Alexandria, Black and Asian graduates comprised the largest minority component while at Annandale and Loudoun Asian graduates outnumbered both Black and Hispanic graduates. At Alexandria and Woodbridge Black students had the second highest percentage of graduates.

GENDER

As shown in Table 10, female graduates were in the majority at all but the Manassas campus. The Loudoun campus had the highest percentage of female graduates (65 percent) while Manassas had the highest percentage of male graduates (54 percent).

AWARDS

The Manassas, Woodbridge, and Loudoun campuses awarded more transfer degrees than occupational-technical awards, ranging from 53 percent of graduates at Woodbridge to 73 percent of graduates at Manassas. Annandale granted 60 percent and Alexandria 58 percent occupational-technical awards.

TOP PROGRAMS WITH LARGEST NUMBER OF GRADUATES BY CAMPUS

Review of the data presented in Tables 13-17 reveals that most of the graduates were concentrated in a few programs ranging from 77 percent at Alexandria to 96 percent at Woodbridge. General Studies, Liberal Arts, Business Administration, and Information Systems Technology are among the top ten at each campus.
