Dr. Steve Sachs, Vice President of Instructional and Information Technology, provides college-wide administrative and operational leadership for NOVA's information technology and distance learning environments.

Instructional and Information Technology (IIT) works with vice presidents, provosts, faculty and staff to develop information technology and distance education plans and budgets, and to provide technology infrastructure and application development to meet the daily needs of our large and vibrant technology-rich community, and identifies and integrates new technologies into the educational and administrative activities of the College.

IIT provides course design assistance, student services, student success initiatives, online student activities, and management of NOVA’s extensive online program that serves more than 23,000 students annually through the Extended Learning Institute. It is also the hub for the Virginia Community College System’s Shared Services Distance Learning program that provides a means for colleges to offer online courses among colleges. The SSDL program now handles more than 3,000 enrollments a year in over 475 courses.

We support campus technology staff by ensuring adherence to quality standards for ongoing network operations, equipment installation and repair, database and application server operation, integration of voice/data/video networks, software installation and debugging, technology staff training, distance education and help-desk functions. NOVA also manages the infrastructure for two smaller VCCS colleges in other parts of the Commonwealth using the latest in virtualization and cloud services.

In addition, IIT coordinates college-wide responses to VCCS technology initiatives, such as SIS, AIS and HRMS, vendor certification training and participates in various College and VCCS committees and task forces, and state and national professional organizations involved with technology planning and implementation.

The Office of Instructional and Information Technology includes the units of Extended Learning Institute (ELI), Enterprise Technology Services, College Information Systems and IT Professional Services. These units provide collaborative leadership and operational services that support the effective delivery of technology to faculty, staff and students across the multiple campuses of the College.
