NOVA Sexual Assault Services (SAS)

  1. SAS Coordinator reaches out to victim
  2. SAS Services:
    • Crisis Intervention
    • Academic Advocacy
    • Legal and Medical Advocacy
    • Support
    • Referrals and Resources Provided
NOVACares Online Reporting System
  1. NOVACares Office assigns SAS as case lead to contact victim. 
NOVA Dean of Students (DOS) or Conduct Officer
  1. Student Code of Conduct Investigation begins if both parties are students.
  2. Refers to NOVA Title IX, NOVA SAS and DOS.
  3. Interviews party(ies).
  4. Interim measures given.
  5. If evidence is sufficient, a conduct hearing may occur.
  6. Conduct hearing.
  1. Accused (respondent) party found guilty.
    • Sanctions Imposed
      • Warnings
      • Probation
      • Suspension
      • Expulsion
  • OR
  1. Accused (respondent) party found not guilty.

* An appeal is possible by either party.

NOVA Title IX Coordinator
  1. Reviews case information.
  1. Victim (complainant) requests confidentiality.
  2. Assessment may be limited due to request.
  3. Interim measures given.
  4. Close case. Refer to SAS.
  • OR
  1. Victim (complainant) doesn’t request confidentiality.
  2. Assessment begins or case is referred to SAS.
  3. Contact DOS.
  4. Interim measures given.
  5. Decision made:
    • case unsubstantiated
    • accused (respondent) found not responsible
    • accused (respondent) found responsible
      • Sanctions imposed:
        • warnings
        • probation
        • suspension
        • expulsion
NOVA Police Department

Incident occurs on campus.

  1. Reviews case information.
  1. Refers to NOVA Title IX, NOVA SAS, and DOS.
  2. Case closed.
  • OR
  1. Criminal investigation begins.
  2. Case referred to Commonwealth’s Attorney (prosecutor).
  3. Arrest made.
  4. No trial OR
  5. Trial.
    • not guilty/no penalty OR
    • guilty and penalty.

* An appeal is possible by accused (defendant) only.

Local Police Department

Incident occurs off campus

  1. Reviews case information.
  2. Criminal investigation begins.
  1. Case closed.
  • OR
  1. Case referred to Commonwealth’s Attorney (prosecutor).
