In ESL 35 Applied Grammar I, students learn about academic English grammar. The course helps ESL students assess their knowledge of English grammar, improve accuracy and learn methods to improve editing. The major emphasis in this course is on verb tenses, verb forms, parts of speech, parts of a sentence and basic sentence structures and types. ESL 35 is available to students in Level 2 (by permission) and to students in Level 3 or higher.

In ESL 45 Applied Grammar II, students practice and refine their grammar skills with regard to the requirements of American college courses. The course helps ESL students assess their knowledge of English grammar, improve accuracy and learn methods to improve editing. The major emphasis in this course is on using gerund and infinitive verb forms, determiners, prepositions, identifying and structuring clauses and phrases and using passive voice appropriately. ESL 45 is available to students in Level 4 or higher.

ESL 48 Writing Workshop is designed for students who complete ESL 41 Composition II with a grade of R. The course provides further practice in writing techniques taught in College ESL composition courses, helping students build fluency and accuracy. Students gain more control over their writing process and language skills through responding to readings and developing self-editing strategies. The major emphasis in this course is on discussing, analyzing and responding to written materials, developing and organizing ideas for writing, drafting, revising and editing. ESL 48 is available to students in Level 4 who have completed ESL 41.

ESL 58 Writing Workshop II is designed for students who complete ESL 51 Composition III with a grade of R. The course provides an intensive writing seminar to help students improve their command of American academic English. Throughout the course, students gain more fluency, develop ideas more effectively and have stronger control in the editing process. The major emphasis in the course is on writing fully developed academic essays using appropriate strategies for composing, revising and editing. ESL 58 is available to students in Level 5 who have completed ESL 51.

ESL 72 Spelling and Vocabulary is designed to help students improve their word knowledge in English. The course helps students master the spelling rules of English, with special attention paid to sound/symbol correspondence and the meanings of and spelling patterns associated with common prefixes and suffixes. In addition, students increase academic and colloquial vocabulary. The major emphasis in the course is on listening for sounds, generating and memorizing rules and patterns, learning vocabulary in context and memorizing vocabulary using a variety of techniques. ESL 72 is available to students in Level 2 (by permission) and to students in Level 3 or higher.

ESL 73 Accent Reduction is designed to help non-native speakers of English be more readily understood by native speakers of English in professional and academic settings. The course helps students pronounce English at the sentence level by working on rhythm, pauses, intonation, and unstressed syllables and at the word level by working on phonemes and allophones of English. ESL 73 is available to students in Level 2 (by permission) and to students in Level 3 or higher.
