During the 2017 NOVA Student Film Festival, Northern Virginia Community College will present a number of films created by NOVA students. The 2017 NOVA Student Film Festival is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27 in the Bisdorf Building, Room 196 at the Alexandria Campus, 5000 Dawes Ave., Alexandria, VA 22311.
This will be the fourth year of the NOVA Student Film Festival, which allows students to use the skills they’ve learned about making and exhibiting a film. In previous years, the festival has partnered with other local film festivals including the D.C. Shorts Film Festival, Alexandria Film Festival and Rosebud Film & Video Festival.
Organizer and Cinema Professor Lucy Gebre-Egziabher said this event will give students the opportunity to show their films to an audience and answer questions from viewers after the film screenings. In partnership with George Mason University, this year’s festival will also include special presentations from NOVA alumni who are now enrolled in GMU’s film studies program.
Last year, Gebre-Egziabher’s students embarked on a unique collaborative journey for the 2016 festival. After teaching film studies in her home country of Ethiopia in fall 2015, Gebre-Egziabher arranged for her students in Ethiopia – who are calling themselves the Ethiopian New Wave Filmmakers – to collaborate on a film with her NOVA students. The film, created by students from different parts of the globe, screened during the 2016 festival. Gebre-Egziabher’s students from Ethiopia have collaborated once again with NOVA students to create another film that will debut during the 2017 NOVA Student Film Festival.
The film festival is free and open to the public and a reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. before the screening of the films. For more information, visit Gebre-Egziabher’s faculty blog.
