The Northern Virginia Community College NOVA Alexandria Community Chorus, Band and Jazz Band will perform a variety of musical selections as part of a concert celebrating the 40th anniversary of the chorus and the band. The concert will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Friday, May 5 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at the Alexandria Campus, 4915 East Campus Drive, Alexandria, VA 22311.
Music will include “Old American Songs” by Aaron Copland, “Lincolnshire Posy” by Percy Grainger, a moving setting of “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli, “Olympiada” by Sam Hazo, “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” by Duke Ellington and “Sweet Georgia Brown” by Ben Bernie, Maceo Pinkard and Kenneth Casey.
The 25-member jazz ensemble, 100-member chorus, and 75-member concert band all combine musicians from the NOVA Music Program with musicians from the surrounding community. The jazz band will be directed by John Kocur, the choir by Dr. Mark Whitmire and the concert band by Lisa Eckstein.
