Northern Virginia Community College’s Web Services & Digital Media (WSDM) department recently rolled out the college’s newly redesigned website. Pittsburgh firm BarkleyREI – an award-winning digital marketing agency specializing in tourism and travel, higher education, non-profit, and consumer marketing – assisted NOVA in the development and launch of the new website.
Two committees – the NOVA Website Redesign Advisory Committee co-chaired by Dr. George Gabriel and Dr. Steve Sachs; and the NOVA Website Redesign Implementation Task Force co-chaired by Professor Lisa Hill and Associate Vice President Cathy Simpson – guided the project and have been meeting and consulting on design, content and necessities for the website since July 2014.
The two committees were made up of members of NOVA administration, faculty and staff. Some of the college’s students were involved in providing feedback to BarkleyREI before the committees were created.
“The redesigned website is more modern and much easier to navigate,” Simpson said. “Together, the committees talked about design and layout, navigation and what faculty, staff and students needed when it comes to content and information about the college.”
Some of the features of the newly redesigned home page include integration of video, a new minimalist design and fun infographics. Other updates include shorter URLs and effective searches. The website is also responsive and will work on any smartphone.
WSDM will be adding a feedback section to the footer of the homepage of the new website, and NOVA welcomes suggestions and feedback from students, faculty and staff.
