Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale Campus will host a tree planting event in recognition of the College’s 50th anniversary. NOVA will host a reception and planting ceremony from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 on the athletic field at the Annandale Campus.
In cooperation with WGL Energy and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, NOVA will plant numerous trees on campus this fall. The slogan for the celebration is “Planting and Planning for the Next 50!” The event is free and open to the public, and NOVA welcomes students, faculty, staff and the community to join them in celebrating 50 years of education.
“We’ll be planting 50 trees on campus and this will be a participatory event,” said Campus Renovations Coordinator Cheryl Robinette. “It’s open to the community so we hope people will come out and celebrate with us and help with this beautification project.”
In 2013, NOVAwas the first higher education institution to partner with WGL Energy to offset its natural gas usage with the company’s CleanSteps Carbon Offsets program, which is an effective and credible way to contribute to restoring nature’s carbon balance and contribute to local CBF projects. Initially offsetting 35 percent of its usage, NOVA is offsetting 100 percent of its usage since December 2014.
“The NOVA Annandale Campus is delighted to partner with WGL Energy and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for this special event,” said Interim Provost Charlotte Calobrisi. “The planting of 50 trees is a wonderful way to celebrate our 50th anniversary and will add such beauty to the campus for many years to come.”
The tree planting event will include a reception with NOVA President Scott Ralls in attendance. Light refreshments will be served, and complimentary gloves with the NOVA logo will also be provided to those participating in planting trees. The Annandale Campus will have free parking in the B lots for the occasion.
The ceremony is sponsored by Annandale Campus, Chesapeake Foundation, WGL Energy, College Educational Foundation and College Facilities Planning & Support Services.
