Grand Opening for Training Futures in Manassas
May 23, 2013
On May 30 at 9 a.m., representatives from Northern Virginia Family Service and Northern Virginia Community College will officially open a new site to expand the nationally recognized Training Futures program into Prince William County. The new site is located at Innovation Park Center (9485 Innovation Drive, Manassas), an extension of NOVA’s Manassas Campus.
The grand opening will begin with brief remarks from Mary Agee, NVFS president and CEO; Dr. Roger Ramsammy, provost at NOVA’s Manassas Campus; Paul Lucas, Training Futures graduate; and Carol Jameson, associate CEO at HealthWorks for Northern Virginia.
“We are delighted to partner with Northern Virginia Family Service to bring Training Futures to our region,” Ramsammy said. “NOVA shares a long history with this innovative program and we couldn’t be happier to help the initiative expand into the greater Prince William area to benefit local residents.”
Training Futures is a workforce development solution with proven results, providing a critical pathway to living wage jobs for high-potential, underemployed individuals. Since 1996, the program has trained more than 1,600 people from diverse backgrounds and experience, with more than 90 percent of graduates securing full-time employment.
Training Futures in Manassas will use the same six-month curriculum that has been so successful in Fairfax County. The curriculum covers business English, business math, computer skills, medical terminology, professional development workshops and more. Through a co-enrollment agreement with NOVA, trainees earn 18 college credits and a career studies certificate, giving them a head start on college.
Applications are still being accepted for the first session of Training Futures in Manassas which will begin June 3. Low income, motivated individuals are encouraged to apply. Trainees pay only for books. To learn more, go to www.nvfs.org/trainingfutures.
