Northern Virginia Community College held its first open house for the military community on Saturday, June 27 at the Woodbridge Campus. Over 50 people registered for the event that included active duty servicemembers, veterans and military spouses.

“We are delighted to host an event of this magnitude at our campus and will support veterans in any and every way possible,” said Dr. Sam Hill, provost of the Woodbridge Campus.

College representatives and military/veteran advisors were on hand to provide information on maximizing veteran benefits, Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA), scholarships and grant opportunities. College advisors answered questions about NOVA’s academic degrees and certificate programs, online options and how to afford college.

Brian Foley, provost of the Medical Education Campus, said in his opening remarks that the goal of the open house was to make active duty servicemembers and veterans successful in college. He also emphasized the importance of increasing awareness about the military spouse program (MyCAA). MyCAA is a program that provides financial assistance to spouses of active duty servicemembers in certain pay grades.

“I hope to gain knowledge and direction on what to do to be successful in my collegiate career,” said Marine Sgt. John Herman, an attendee of the open house. Herman has been in the service for nine years and plans to start NOVA in the fall.

Attendees were encouraged to bring military transcripts and/or previous college-level work to discuss the possible transfer of credits. For more information on NOVA’s Office of Military Services, go to: http://www.nvcc.edu/current-students/military/
