NOVA-Annandale to host environmental & musical event

What:
The Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is set to hold its popular Science Seminar/Lyceum event with an environmentally-themed concert and lecture on Friday, Nov. 22. This event is free and open to the public.

The keynote lecture, “Climate Change Mitigation and Impacts: Technologies and Policies,” will be given by Dr. Jayant A. Sathaye. Sathaye is a senior scientist, strategic advisor and a founder of the International Energy Studies Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif. He was a primary contributor to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Nobel Prize.

Sathaye is an internationally recognized expert on climate change issues. His work, which has appeared in 220 publications, includes the research, modeling and policy analysis of energy efficiency standards, and the development of global and country-specific models. These models are used for the evaluation of costs and climate mitigation options in the U.S., India and other major developing countries.

The Seminar will also feature music and piano reflecting on the environment performed by NOVA faculty member Jonathan D. Kolm, DMA, composer and pianist, and vocalist soprano Katherine Riddle. Dr. Kolm has performed across the U.S. and abroad and his music has been heard at various festivals including Beijing International Composition Workshop, MUSCICX and the Ernest Bloch Festival.

This event is presented by the Lyceum and the Science Seminar Committee, Math, Science and Engineering Division of the Annandale Campus.

Background:
The lecture will provide background information and overview of global energy and climate, mitigation components of climate change research, energy efficiency and renewable energy modeling. Discussions will also include approaches to forest sector, ways to increase surface albedo and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, switching to non-fossil energy; as well as ways to use safe drinking water. and fuel efficient cook stoves.
