President Obama Visits NOVA

February 17, 2012

President Obama

During his fifth trip to NOVA President Barack Obama said, “The main reason I keep on coming back is I think this institution is an example of what’s best about America.”

The February 13 presidential speech took place in the Ernst Community Cultural Center at NOVA’s Annandale Campus. At the White House’s request, students made up the majority of the audience. Obama was introduced by student Mike Phillips who enrolled at NOVA as an adult.

“After working various jobs in the real estate industry for years, I found myself having to start over,” Phillips explained. Phillips researched growing industries and selected the cyber security field. At NOVA, Phillips earned two career certificates and is working on an associate degree.

“We need more stories like Mike’s,” Obama said. “That’s why my administration is helping community colleges redesign training programs, so students can learn the skills that are most in demand in industries like health care sciences and advanced manufacturing.”

Obama announced that Dr. Jill Biden (AL) and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will tour several states to highlight businesses and community colleges that are working together to train workers.

Obama noted that we need to give community colleges the resources they need to become community career centers.
