Northern Virginia Community College and Virginia Hospital Center to Offer Camp Med
July 12, 2012
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and Virginia Hospital Center will again partner to offer middle school-aged students interested in healthcare, the opportunity to interact with medical professionals in a variety of disciplines.
Camp Med is offered in two sessions, the first session takes place July 16-20 and is designed for rising 6th & 7th graders. The second session runs July 30-Aug. 3 and is for rising 8th & 9th graders. Twenty-four students will participate each week, spending Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Virginia Hospital Center, 1701 N. George Mason Drive; Tuesday and Thursday at NOVA’s Medical Education Campus, 6699 Springfield Center Drive.
At NOVA, students will become certified in HeartSavers (CPR/Basic Life Support) and participate in a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) simulation, where they will be exposed to the fields of police-forensics, EMS, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy and Diagnostic Imaging.
At Virginia Hospital Center, they will participate in a simulation in the pulmonary and cardiac catheterization labs, ER, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation and medical diagnostics areas; they will participate in a mock Operating Room and learn to use a stethoscope.
“This is a very sought-after camp,” said Mary Ellen Gannon of Virginia Hospital Center. “Students from previous years are just begging to come back, but we have to limit the size to ensure the best experience. It is such a great learning opportunity.”
