NOVA and Goodwill Partner to Help Low-Income Adults Advance Their Careers
January 20, 2010
On December 16, NOVA and Goodwill Industries International welcomed 40 participants from around the country to NOVA’s Alexandria Campus for a pathbreaking national strategy meeting. This meeting kicked off a planning process that is intended to create a national strategy for local partnerships between Goodwill Industries and the nation’s community colleges to help thousands of low-income adults nationwide achieve job and college attainment results.
The objectives for the event were to align all leadership participants around a common project vision of developing a national Goodwill Industries-Community College workforce development strategy, confirm each organization’s participation in the initiative and identify key planning issues to address and action plans needed to create a joint national proposal by spring 2010.
“This partnership has incredibly powerful potential,” said President Robert G. Templin, Jr., “Goodwill is the nation’s largest nonprofit job training provider and community colleges are the largest delivery system providing low-cost college educational opportunities. Our goal is to see if we can launch a national solution on how to accelerate low-income breadwinners’ advancement into new careers and earn college credentials.”
NOVA’s early work with coenrollment nonprofit job training partners has established one proven model for creating new relationships between local job training providers and community colleges. As a result, national leaders from Goodwill Industries International have identified NOVA’s model for community-based nonprofit job training programs-community college partnerships as one of its top strategic priorities.
