Convocation Successfully Kicks Off Fall Semester for First Year Experience
October 25, 2010
College-wide Convocation services were held last month. This special ceremony is part of the First Year Experience (FYE) program offered at each campus as an effort to increase student engagement and retention.
When asked if these first year students felt more part of the NOVA community, 94 percent of the students answered “yes,” and several students pointed out the benefits to attending and taking part in Convocation. Students who participated took an oath to become involved and responsible students and received a pin to commemorate the event.
The FYE initiative is aimed at promoting the three C’s: connection, community building and critical thinking. The goal is to enhance the overall experience of first year students and assist in a smooth transition which will help NOVA retain students until they graduate.
