NOVA Second in Total Associate Degrees Awarded
June 24, 2010
Northern Virginia Community College awards more associate degrees than all other two-year institutions except one, according to a report by “Community College Week.”
In the 2008-09 academic year, 3,210 NOVA students earned associate degrees, a 10 percent increase over the previous year. Valencia Community College in Florida was the top associate degree producer for two-year institutions.
“Increasingly, students are recognizing the value of completing an associate degree,” said NOVA President Robert G. Templin Jr. “In today’s economy, more people are using the associate degree as a stepping stone to a four-year institution through our guaranteed admissions agreements with dozens of Virginia colleges and universities.”
The report also compared the number of associate degrees awarded by discipline. Among two-year institutions, NOVA awarded the most associate degrees in “Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services” with 237 graduates. NOVA was second in “Business, Management, Marketing and Related Support Services” with 752 students earning associate degrees. NOVA came in fifth in “Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences” and 13th in “Nursing.”
In addition, NOVA ranked second for the number of Asian-Americans who earned associate degrees with 620 graduates, a 27 percent increase over the previous year.
