Phi Theta Kappa welcomes new members at Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College
November 20, 2009
The Alpha Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently held its fall induction at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. During the ceremony, Assistant Professor of History Rebecca Hayes reflected on her experience with Phi Theta Kappa.
“The scholarships, leadership skills and personal connections I gained from my membership in PTK really helped me when I transferred to a four-year university and even beyond to graduate school,” Hayes said. “I encouraged our new members to use all of the resources available through PTK and told them that they’re part of an important family of scholars who reach out to fellow members when they need help.”
Hayes and Ed Anderson, associate professor of mathematics, serve as co-advisors for the Manassas Campus chapter.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters in the United States, U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, United Arab Emirates and Palau. To be eligible for membership a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work, earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and maintain a high academic standing throughout enrollment.
A reception for the new members and their families was held after the ceremony. To learn more, contact Hayes at rhayes@nvcc.edu or 703-257-6695.
