Airport photos land in Waddell Art Gallery
May 4, 2009
“Geographies,” featuring photographs by Kathleen Shafer, will be on exhibit from May 18 to June 19 in the Waddell Art Gallery at the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. The campus is located at 1000 Harry Flood Byrd Highway in Sterling. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Shafer has photographed nearly 100 airfields. Her exhibit at the Loudoun Campus will showcase images of Dulles Airport.
“My work explores the landscape of airfields and other elements of the air travel industry,” she said. “I travel this country extensively in an ongoing search for the way that various airfields mark the beautiful changing topographies.”
Her interest in airports began with the artist Robert Smithson who identified the airport as the quintessential earthwork, a stunning example of leaving a long-term mark on the land.
“Smithson was killed before the promise of the jet age could be fulfilled but he’d probably have been fascinated by the way airport earthworks have evolved, expanded and often been repurposed,” Shafer said. “While my interest in the ideas of space and permanence of airports started with Smithson, I am also fascinated by Le Corbusier’s ideas about the drama with which the empty horizontal space of airfields meets the verticality of airport facilities and surrounding urbanity.”
Shafer has exhibited widely and was named the 2007 Young Artist in the Bethesda (Md.) Contemporary Art Awards competition.
