Earth Day Celebration at NOVA-Woodbridge

April 21, 2010 5:00 PM

What
The Green Club at Northern Virginia Community College is commemorating Earth Day with a weeklong celebration.

Green Art
On Wednesday, April 21 from 5 to 6 p.m., adjunct professor Lauren Jacobs will present “Green Art.” Jacobs will provide homemade, organic paints to allow participants to experiment with the media. Jacobs started questioning her consumption and materiality in graduate school, while also trying to figure out a way to create art (which uses many products filled with toxins) that didn't make her feel like a hypocrite. She will also discuss the role of art in activism and the rising demand for “green” design. The hands-on workshop will be in room 160.

Other Activities
On Tuesday, April 20, students created videos for the Repower America Web site and wrote letters to legislators about environmental concerns. Throughout the week, informative videos such as “Finite Oceans,” “Coal Country,” “Inconvenient Truth” and “Revolution Green” were screened.

Background
The Green Club is a new, enthusiastic organization of students, faculty and staff at NOVA’s Woodbridge Campus. English instructor Jennifer Feller is the club sponsor. Contact Feller at jfeller@nvcc.edu or 703-878-5721.
