The Medical Education Campus (MEC) of Northern Virginia Community College will open its doors once again to more than 300 preschool children for the 2018 Give Kids A Smile© event on Friday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS), the annual program provides free dental services to children in underserved populations. Virginia Governor Ralph S. Northam is expected to be in attendance for this year’s event.
The children, generally part of the Arlington County Head Start Program and referred by the NVDS, will be seen by local dentists, hygienists and dental assistants who volunteer through the NVDS as well as dental hygiene students enrolled in the program at the MEC. Children will receive evaluations, prophylaxis (teeth polishing) and fluoride treatments. Patients will be referred to local dentists if they need extensive dental treatment.
Through the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation, the Give Kids A Smile program launched nationally in 2003. In 2017, free dental services were provided by more than 30,000 dental team members, 8,000 of whom were dentists. To date, more than 5.5 million underserved children have received free oral health services through the annual program. Each year, Give Kids A Smile is celebrated nationwide and at NOVA’s Medical Education Campus on the first Friday in February.
Give Kids A Smile will be held in the Medical Education Campus Dental Clinic, Room 132, located on the first floor. Parking is available on the 1st level of the parking garage in spaces marked Visitor. NOVA’s Medical Education Campus is located at 6699 Springfield Center Drive, Springfield.
The media is welcome to attend and cover the event.
